What Is A Vaquita?

When we first launched our vaquita documentary project in the spring of 2015 we reached out to one of our Wild Lens contributors who has a truly unique talent.  Ben Mirin makes music from the sounds of wildlife by blending his own beatboxing with audio samples from the natural world.  We were hoping that he could make us a song using the high frequency sonar clicks of the vaquita - a serious challenge.

The vaquita lives only in the very Northernmost corner of the Gulf of California in Mexico.  What makes this small patch of marine habitat so unique?  How have changes in the region's ecosystems impacted the vaquita?  We're exploring these questions and more in this episode of the show.

Where does the Vaquita Live?

Although the situation faced by the vaquita is quite dire, there are lots of organizations and individuals that are committed to doing all they can to prevent the vaquita’s extinction.  This effort is actually quite impressive when taken in as a whole.  In this episode, we will summarize and discuss many of these efforts, then analyze why the vaquita population has continued its rapid decline despite these many programs designed to save the species.
