This song is a rework of the song Wild Mother by Ouri & Mind Bath. 

It’s a very personal interpretation of what a wild mother is, since my hungarian mom identifies herself as a mystic and she is the daughter of an actual spy.

Wild Mother II (feat. Ouri & Mind Bath) [Remix]

This is a rework from the original Men I Trust song, Tailwhip. Producing this remix was both extremely fun and terrifying at the same time because I know Dragos, Emma, and Jessy personally and they are just so good at what they do… I wanted to honour their song in a humble way, while bringing a part of my universe into it. In the end, it’s more of a conversation than a remix.

Tailwhip is my favourite Men I Trust song, so I knew that there was a specific soothing vibe that had to stay intact within it. To me, that essence was kind of sacred. But when Dragos sent me the stems to make the remix, one of their tracks was labeled “New-Age” and I thought: "That’s a sign! It’s my direction. Let’s try to bring this song into the clouds a bit”.

The end result is bouncy, vaporous and a bit mystical.

I remembered Dragos telling me how fun it was to make a music video with their childhood footage. So I thought, maybe I could create some kind of dialogue with him by reproducing their video concept with my remix.

Dragos grew up in Chaudière-Appalaches, a region of Quebec, just like Jessy and myself. The name of the region is written on Emma’s t-shirt in the original video, so I knew I had to include that in mine.I also added footage of my childhood when I visited my family in Hungary in response to Drago’s Eastern European origin.

My remix is a tribute to Men I Trust and a memoir to myself.

Men I Trust - Tailwhip - Varfalvy Rework

This song is a remix of Fjord’s original song I Get It Now.

The band sent me their stems earlier this year. I remember reading the lyrics of their song, thinking that maybe the protagonist could be a bit less passive and a bit more agressive about the situation he is describing.

That was my direction and this remix is the result of that experiment!

These three songs are the first steps into Varfalvy’s complex universe. 

In what he describes as “New New-Age” or “Industrial new-age downtempo”, Varfalvy explores the sounds and instruments of his origins. “I like to use natural sounds and treat them in an unnatural way” he says. “Like using the classic 808 Hi-Hat beat repeat technique on a bouzouki VST for example”.

“I think my biggest inspiration is my mom. She is an artist who's been deep diving in the esoteric culture full of angels, crystals and spiritual artefacts. She even paints UFOs! So I grew up with balkan new-age art around me. I remember hating it because I was a gothic teenager and I had to play along with that narrative. I think we all do it when we are kids. After all, some adults are still struggling with their outdated avatar. But as I grew older I couldn’t deny how strongly my mom’s music resonated into myself. It’s like the sound of my mom’s infinite love, how could I possibly hate that? So I had to make that other inner voice, full of light, relevant within my identity simply because it was undeniably there! This EP is an attempt to merge those two sides of my mind together and simply introduce myself as clearly as possible”.

AIR (It’s ok)
In the first song called AIR, Varfalvy delivers a static vocal performance. “I didn’t know what to sing at first. Who am I to say something? Why should someone listen to me? But I’ve been hosting tarot nights in Montreal for 2 years now and I realized that I probably read roughly 2000 people. So I thought about them and about the common struggles all humans seem to experience. I tried to put all of their souls in one person and it is to that person that I am talking to in the song AIR.” Varfalvy is an Air sign (Libra). Air signs are said to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time, like Varfalvy’s voice. “Don’t get me wrong, Tarot is medieval psychology. At least it's my take on it. It’s a kind of healing performance art. Nothing magical. I don’t believe in magic. But I genuinely hope I can somehow help people feel better about themselves.”

More AIR (Hussar)
The second song called MORE AIR, is a tribute to his grandfather Lajos Varfalvy who used to be a Hussar (Hungarian elite chevalerie) before getting involved as one of the leaders of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. He was also a spy bridging Hungary with other countries who financed and fed this revolution. “So the sword is one of the 4 items of tarot. When I think of my grandfather riding a horse, I immediately see the Knight of Swords card in my mind. The knight of sword is also linked an Air sign in tarot. Swords characters are idealistic, fearless, they have pure intentions and they don’t care about the consequences of their acts. They just charge. The white horse symbolizes the purity of intentions. I basically did that song for myself. I like to take long walks, step on those bpm and feel like I’m invincible like my grandfather. I hope this song gives you courage in times of need.”

Requiem For earth
The third and fourth songs together are called Requiem for earth. The description is in the title. “I mourn for our planet but I also celebrate life as I try to translate that moving sense of awe that I get when I contemplate the immensity of nature.”
