I wanted to steer away from the idea of only playing tracks as unknown as possible in a set, so here are the (overplayed) greatest dancefloor hits of the Amsterdam techno scene in ~2023. All killer, no filler!

Varuna • Episode 014 • Behind The Mix

For this special 20th edition of Full Range Motion on Operator, I've invited one of Amsterdam's most exciting techno talents: DJ, producer, sound tech, and official future student of electronic music at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music @Varunae . We talk some of her influences, approach to DJing, social media struggles, as well as topics such a track selection, folders, and 'crunchy' techno. We do a short interview at the start after which Varuna plays for 40/45 minutes. After that we do another short talk, finishing the show with bouncing our latest favourite tracks to each other. I hope you enjoy!

Number 098 of our mix series is delivered by Varuna. Enamored with the sense of unity that arises on sweaty dance floors, her goal is to create more of this unity and connect people with themselves and others through music. Growing up as the child of a former drummer and percussionist, she found early inspiration that laid the foundation for her sound as it is today. Her music blends intricate, jazz-infused rhythms with gritty, ever-evolving soundscapes, soulful pads, and otherworldly, trippy sounds. Drawing from elements of Detroit techno, ambient, dub, acid, electro, and sometimes broken beats, she creates a futuristic utopian landscape where body and mind can connect.

Currently working as a junior audio engineer and studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam’s Electronic Music Academy, she continues to explore and evolve her sound.

Beatmatching is sloppy in the first 35 mins, had some difficulty with hearing the mixer cues & the monitors + i was too short to reach the upper cdjs properly (even while standing on a platform lol) so that took some time getting used to
