These drone was recorded today Thursday 5th December 2024 in a 3 hours session. I recorded 3 instances of OB-X and 3 of OB-E software synths by Gforce (just bought them 5 days ago) @gforce-software
It starts with an OB-E bass, then one OB-X synth pad and gradually the rest of the synths start joingin the drone party to make things more dense and 
Gradually the first "tame" drone is left alone to resume this brief demo.
Hope you like the sound of these synths, but the other demos I'm working (rhythmic stuff, with the DMX I also bought) are much better to show the Oberheim potential.

Live Drone (disquiet0675)

For Disquiet Junto 0675, "Arc of the Drone", we were invited to record a drone piece that began and ended simply but had a complex middle.

For this one I brought in the whole NOSIGNAL Multimedia Lab orchestra. The main drone is from a tortured Nave wavetable, and the motion pads are courtesy of an Alchemy synth. There are also a few layers of vocal samples, some field recordings, shortwave radio, and two layers of ebow guitar. I think people should be able to dance to drones so I put a simple "grimy 909" kick at the bottom of the stack to keep things moving.

The title of the piece refers to the poem "The Devil of Pope Fig Island" by 17th century fabulist Jean de la Fontaine. The cover image is from an 1896 illustration by Charles Eisen, depicting the climactic scene in which an inhabitant of the bedeviled island chases Lucifer off for good by flashing her vulva at him.

Best enjoyed with headphones.

Nothing like a good drone to pass a winter's day. My go to instruments for droning are the Arp 2600 and the Buchla Easel, both of which were tuned to the same pitch. I let them drone on, playing with the resonance, timbre and filter controls as time went by. A third channel was recorded with the two routed through the Cosmos and the "cinema everything" patch on the Zoia. Once in Logic, further effects were added, notably Arturia's Motion and Fragments, along with a lot of panning and faders going up and down. The result is, well a drone, best heard on headphones while under a blanket.

The Assignment: Record a drone that goes from simple to complex to simple.
 
Step 1: You may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.

Step 2: Now think about what makes a drone simple and what makes a drone complex.

Step 3: Now record a piece of drone music that begins simple, gets complex, and then gets simple again. And note: The simple drone at the end needn’t necessarily be the same sort of drone with which the piece opens.

* Print 2: Reprint to remove clock errors in the outro. Less low end roll-off. 
* Print 3: Removed some Lexicon ticks

* Clicky drone: Arturia Microfreak “Cliched Things” into Lexicon PCM 41, full square wave modulation, fed to a spring reverb by a Radial Tank Driver.

An arc of the drone represents the path that seeks a beginning and, through the long notes, seeks an end, even if it does not resemble the beginning, with the “arc” as that moment a musician is open to the journey where there is now knowledge of the beginning and the intent to know the end. And the intent may not even manifest in how the drone ends.

Takuboku Ishikawa is best remembered for his emphatic and introspective tanka: his poems were accepted by the one of the most important tanka journals of the early 20th century, “Myojo”, when he was only 16.
Takuboku Ishikawa’s two major collections of tanka, “Ichiaku no Suna” (“A Handful of Sand”) and “Kanashiki Gangu” (“Sad Toys”), came out in 1910 and 1912. “Sad Toys” was published posthumously in June 1912, two months after he died of tubercolosis at the age of 26.
