At some point, the music came. Inadvertently. A noise, followed by another, followed by another. Resulting in a melody, or a rhythm. Gathering everyone around, suddenly drawn by this weird lullaby, asking the neo-instrumentalists to repeat the enthralling loop, endlessly.
Then, the discovery spontaneously spread across frontiers, across ages. Up to this day, laden down with all the knowledges and influences collected along the road.
Stéréogramme, the newest Parisian label, dedicates its initial imprint to this journey. To the strange and captivating music filled with ancient sounds and atmospheres, yet produced today. As a manifesto of the coming explorations to be released: library, leftfield electronics, freak folk, minimal synth, fourth-world…

A 50-minute cassette compilation to highlight ten worldwide producers, providing two distinct listening experiences. A joyous first part, featuring playful and extravagant contributions from Hipólito, Lyckle De Jong, Charlotte Leclerc, Manoir Molle and Romain de Ferron. Making way for a darker second act, tinged with psychedelic and mental abstractions from Steve Pepe, Chorus Abstracta, Raymonde, Inturist and Bear Bones, Lay Low.

Designed by the infamous Structure Bâtons - as another bond with minimalist and naïve art -, a hundred tapes for just as many cover combinations, thanks to various artworks and stickers.

Massimo Carozzi is a sound recordist, sound designer and musician based in Bologna, Italy. Since 1994 he has looked into relations between sound and image, sound and script, sound and literature, sound and space. Massimo Carozzi has created sound design for theatre, documentaries, short films, installations. As a musician he collaborated both in studio and on stage with various musicians and sound artists such as Andrea Belfi, Stefano Pilia, Margareth Kammerer, Valerio Tricoli, Claudio Rocchetti, Starfuckers and many others. In September 2000 he founded the group ZimmerFrei whose artistic practice ranges from video art to documentary films, sound and environmental installations, as well as photography, performances, workshops and public art projects.

Massimo Carozzi - Echelon

Following on from last year´s set of hallucinatory vignettes for Milan´s Haunter Records on "Jemi" and the dissection of the possible tearjerking sensibilities of self-help twitter bots on 'You'll Always Stay Beautiful' for Bristol´s NoCorner, @Broshuda glides on to casually deliver this glistening and equally heartfelt 7 Inch for Cologne based Imprint RDK Island.

On the A side, a reflection in the half light resonance of evening/dawn envelops the fractal heavily melodic core of 'Face2'. Floating in some ebulliently chilled out existence not that far, but still quite on its own trajectory, from some of Mouse On Mars most absorbing moments. An hypnagogic cityscape, brimming with lives, real and imagined.
On the flipside 'Voices' hypnotic melody-as-dream gives way to a smoldering state of aural unease, borderline anxiety creeping in, an "orchestra" of filtered, fading voices & realities. Gliding as a state unto itself, neither here nor there. This reality's what you make of it.

Saint Abdullah, composed of Tehran-born brothers Mohammad and Mehdi, have fine-tuned their vision of conceptual, blown-out dub and free jazz with “In God’s Image,” an ambitious twenty-song double CD on Psychic Liberation. The opus by the two Iranians living in New York, is full of mourning and rage, but these affects only scratch the surface of the work’s emotional and formal heterogeneity. 

Like the image gracing its cover—a tiny, dusty peykan, its roof fitted with an image of Ruhollah Khomeini and cone speakers—Saint Abdullah uses DIY minimalism to deliver maximal messaging. On “Problem,” distorted percussion, Shia oration, and a sample of the late Nipsy Hussle meld into a cathartic club burner, while the rhythms and lifted string arpeggiations on “Potion for sorrow” induce hazy cinematics, the duo’s attempt at Persian stoner boom bap. 

Elsewhere are instances of improvised jamming, melancholic twinkling, and pensive restraint. The powerfully eclectic statement by Saint Abdullah includes appearances by saxophonist Travis Laplante, who blows a spiralling noir line over feedbacking cacophony. On another track, Moor Mother delivers a poetic lashing on Western imperialists who rain missiles on hospitals, grieves the bodies piling up as capital gets sucked from the Earth. 

The sample work on “In God’s Image” draws heavily from Iranian documentaries, and includes the brothers’ field recordings from Tehran and New York. Heretical combinations collide senses of antiquity and contemporaneity, resisting the many orientalist reads on Iranian culture and politics. In this struggle, Saint Abdullah conveys many emotional registers, from exhausted depression to righteous indignation. 

Among many things, the image of Khomeini on the cover, which often scandalizes American audiences, represents the overthrow of a 2,500-year-long monarchy. All forms of dehumanization receive the sonic snakebite of Saint Abdullah, and “In God’s Image” resuscitates the revolutionary potential of music that pulls from the traditions of oppressed peoples in both the East and West. 

Psychic Liberation, in operation since 2018, is an experimental music label started in Brooklyn, New York, currently based in The Hague, Netherlands. The label is distributed in North America by Fantastique, and in EU/UK by Boomkat.
