Mumble Man

Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

must admit that i’ve been having a lot of fun while producing music recently—new ideas are flowing and i’ve been learning lots of new processes along the way. somehow this set feels like a bit like the reflection of that: boundary-free and full of exploration.

Efdemin is a DJ, producer, multidisciplinary artist and a certified legend of electronic music. As a resident of Berghain his infamous sets attract a cult-like devotion and his releases on iconic labels like Dial, Curle and Ostgut Ton are equally as revered. He’s remixed superstar artists like Depeche Mode, Tiga and Moby and has even been remixed by the enigmatic maestro Traumprinz.

If you know Efdemin, you already know this mix is killer, if somehow you don't then you are in for a treat. Turn it up extra loud.

Diving into the back catalogues of one of the greatest of all French Caribbean labels, Disques Debs.

Emerging in the late 1950s under the vision of Henri Debs, Disques Debs became a cornerstone of Guadeloupe’s music scene, shaping the island’s sound for decades. The label’s vast catalogue spanned genres from biguine and bolero to cadence-lypso, zouk, and reggae, releasing an impressive array of over 300 7" singles and 200 LP albums during it's time. 

Henri Debs ensured his studio remained at the cutting edge of sound production. Regular trips to New York and Paris allowed him to source the latest recording equipment and master new techniques, keeping his facility ahead of the curve. Laura Palmer EP - Released 14th November via Believe Digital

Following on from the breakthrough success of debut single Flaws/Icarus, BASTILLE, led by South London based musician Dan Smith, present their sophomore outing, the four-track EP: Laura Palmer.

Opening with the Twin Peaks inspired eponymous song’s huge chanted chorus and pulsating drums, Smith immediately reminds us why Flaws/Icarus was such a runaway success; his music manages to garner attention-grabbing hooks while avoiding clichés and gimmickry. ‘Overjoyed’ reveals another side to Bastille; a darker more sombre but ultimately uplifting affair that sees glitch drumbeats coalesce with haunting, melancholic vocals to stirring effect. 

Meanwhile ‘Get Home’ and ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’, with it’s epic string arrangements, see Smith experimenting with his sound and pursuing new sonic avenues, the only constant being his distinctive voice and aforementioned love of melody. ‘Get Home’ in particular makes for an affecting listen as it gradually builds to the most colossal wall of vocoder harmonies since Bon Iver’s ‘Woods’.

Previous single Flaws/Icarus, which The Independent described as “an understated gem”, saw BASTILLE on the receiving end of a considerable amount of attention, the video for ‘Flaws’ garnering over 160, 000 views on YouTube and being covered by dozens of other performers. The release received great reviews from Artrocker and Time Out amongst others, and received early support from Radio 1, Xfm and 6 Music along the way. 

As a live band BASTILLE are earning a fierce reputation, aided by Smith’s versatile and unique stage presence. They have had a busy summer of festivals and sold-out headline shows, as well as supporting the likes of Foster the People and Fenech-Soler. Now with a national tour to celebrate the release of the EP lined up for the autumn, Bastille’s live show is turning into a salivatory proposition.
