Bakazobaa - "are you coming"? We've all been stood up, we've all uttered these words, sometimes in vain! This song is about the many reasons, good, bad and worse, that keep us all waiting when someone we like stands us up.

For staying bewitched by their own image on TV, their own ubiquity on the radio, the music industry, and the entertainment world of the 1960s and 1970s, did the Tropicalia lose its historic chance to transform Brazilian culture in levels even deeper? How much did the Tropicalists becoming media stars kept them away from a more earthly transformation of MPB into an anthropophagic, oral, and ritualistic power?

The sound piece "Tropicália Transposed to Brazil Post-TV" is a fictitious song suggested as a bonus track from the 1968 Gilberto Gil's album, composed with a collage of "Pé da Roseira", "Domingo no Parque", "Coragem para Suportar", "Questão de Ordem", "Luzia Luluza " and Vivian's "djembe" drum solo, as an imagination exercise of what the sound of 60's Gilberto Gil will be like when there is no more TV.


Encantados com sua auto-imagem televisiva, com as rádios, indústria fonográfica e o mundo do entretenimento da década de 60 e 70, teria a Tropicália perdido sua chance histórica de transformar a cultura brasileira em níveis ainda mais profundos? O quanto que os Tropicalistas terem se tornados estrelas midiáticas os afastou de uma transformação mais terrena da MPB em uma potência antropofágica, oral e ritualística?

A peça sonora "Tropicália Transposta para o Brasil Pós-TV" é uma canção-ficção sugerida como uma faixa bônus do disco Gilberto Gil de 1968, construída a partir de uma colagem de "Pé da Roseira", "Domingo no Parque", "Coragem pra Suportar", "Questão de Ordem" e "Luzia Luluza" e um solo de tambor "djembe", como um exercício de imaginação do que será a sonoridade do Gilberto Gil da década de 60 quando não houver mais a TV.

TRANSPOSED TROPICALIA TO POST-TV BRAZIL | Tropicália Transposta Para O Brasil Pós-TV

Primeira Vista (First Sight), 2013, 4 min, stereo audio, song "I Cares" by Legato, 1982.
First Sight is a repetition of "I Cares", composed by Legato in 1982. " I Cares" is a lovers rock-style reggae song, a style developed by the 80s young generation of Jamaicans living in the UK. Lovers rock, with romantic lyrics and a well-polished music production takes reggae to new environment: pop radio and nightclubs. Vivian reworked the song by looping the intro section and adding a new acoustical feel to each repetition.

Gaivota is a repetition of the song of same name by Gilberto Gil. The song, that talks about a frozen image a seagull flying from Brazilian shore, is looped and added a different acoustical feel to each repetition. The piece of composed during Study Days expedition of São Paulo Biennale in Accra, Ghana.

Os Cretinos e MC WM - Estremece quando ela desce (Puga Remix)

Comissioned for "Sonic Rebellion", MOCA Detroit, 2017

I call my composition a spiritual radio hallucination, a fictitious show that has only one hit: "Praying Spirit" by the Dynamic Clark Sisters. Throughout this show we'll hear extracts from WDTR FM's programs from the 90s and 2000s. I also improvised and composed with similar textures, style and sounds, as an emotional expansion of the past from my personal/musical perspective.

I went to the former headquarters of WDTR FM, a public radio station founded in 1947 that was run by the public schools of Detroit. There I found tapes of shows from the 90s and early 2000s, the last years of the station that was shut down and sold. It is now a private station that plays jazz and classical music. In the past, WDTR FM did not have the imperative of profit, so they were very experimental in their content: shows presented by kids, political discussions, community engagement campaigns, story telling, museum visits... total freedom for the voices of Detroit, followed by the power of its gospel.
