so, there's this dude i've been subscribed to on youtube for almost 5 years now. he goes by toonrifictariq and he makes these incredibly well-put-together video essays on animation, often on cartoons & movies that usually don't get more than just a passing mention most of the time.

one of the most unique things about his reviews and essays, though, is the stuff that he plays throughout the videos as background music! a lot of R&B and rap, from classics of the 90's to more modern cuts; all very smooth, soulful, and catchy. in particular, his mid-roll ad breaks are soundtracked by a loop from the very end of "Soul Intact (Interlude)" by the group SWV. it's a really nice loop, and i've been trying to get back into messing with samples again, so after watching some of his videos again, i got inspired & took the bit tariq looped to give it my own flair! added a sub bass, some extra drums, pitched it down a lil', y'know!

i ended up posting a shorter version to a channel in his patreon discord and i woke up the next morning to him tagging me wanting to buy it to use in his next video, so, what did i do?


i sold it to him!

finally getting around to uploading this to soundcloud! lots of new music soon, keep an ear out!

i don't know how to play the guitar so i just transcribed everything by ear into ableton hehe. i added an old drumbreak and an e-piano section too, maybe i'll tighten it up/get more creative with it in the future so it's more "unique"

my singing (and by extension the autotuning) is rough too but i'm proud of myself for not immediately going for the vocoder [read: she hated how the vocoded take sounded and didn't wanna go and plug her hardware in]

back in the early 2000's, the toonami block on cartoon network aired a special edition of the midnight run, wherein they played the first four parts of daft punk's "interstella 5555" and three videos from the self titled gorillaz album (plus a real cool shortfilm soundtracked with "hellbent" by kenna)for the entire timeslot. i believe they did this again like, twice? this ended up shaping me and my music taste, as i'd go on to fall in love with the music of daft punk *and* gorillaz, and i have toonami to thank.

years later, i rediscovered the bumpers from that night and was mesmerized by the music that would play in the coming-up-next bumpers. i decided then to do a tribute to it and the entire night as a whole by giving the song my own twist! <3
