The song is great, but as an anthem, it misses one important point. It is not easy to sing. It is also not melodic enough to stand without instrumentation. Except for the refrain, there is no way to get a large group of voices to join in this song. Cannot march to it, join in collective chant, or even remember how to start it or end it.

One Billion Rising comes as we remember only too clearly the horrendous rape and murder of 23 year old physio therapy student Jyoti Singh Pandey who was gang raped and murdered by a gang of 5 men and a boy on a bus whilst returning home from watching The Life of Pi at the cinema. This crime has caused revulsion in Delhi and across the entire world. Whilst this crime is at the extreme end of the violence a third of the worlds women suffer during their lifetimes, it is indicative of cultures, states and religions that deem women less than human

ONE BILLION RISING IS: 
A global strike  
An invitation to dance  
A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends  
An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers  
A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given  
A new time and a new way of being

On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, 2.14.13, ONE BILLION women and those who love them are being invited to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. ONE BILLION RISING will move the earth, activating women and men across every country.
