While techno-DnB emerged back in the early 2000s alongside titanic subgenres like neurofunk and techstep, technoid drum and bass was born under far more intricate and subtle circumstances. The rise of the technoid subgenre is directly tied to a particular group of artists and their unique sonic influence during the years 2007 to 2011.

Its peak — the true triumph of technoid — was in 2008, right at the center of this period. That was the golden age of the subgenre we love, when labels like Offkey, Sinuous, and many others were putting out astonishingly heavy releases with utterly mad and unpredictable sound design.

We’re bringing that tradition back. We’re reviving the raw power and chaos of technoid and techno-DnB — and with great pride, we present to you our new compilation: TECHNOID: GREATEST COMEBACK VOL. 1

This series will feature works by artists who embody the very essence of why these subgenres continue to captivate us. Few names carry the weight and innovation of Receptor, a producer long regarded as one of Drum & Bass’s most forward-thinking figures since his debut in 2008. As one of the founding members of Evolution Chamber, his influence has been cemented through ground-breaking solo works and collaborations that consistently raise the bar. Among those partnerships, his creative synergy with Engage has stood out for its intensity and precision, yielding tracks like Bio, Wi-Fi Waves, and Gothic. Now, a decade later, the pair return to the fold with their latest creation - “Surgeon.”

From its opening, Surgeon sets an unsettling tone with eerie pads and delicate hats, laying the groundwork for a sense of tension and intrigue. The track quickly develops with a phone-dial motif and thudding bass kicks, before dropping into an eruption of sharp snares and gritty, protruding bass stabs that cut through the mix with precision. Just when the pressure becomes overwhelming, the breakdown offers a brief reprieve before the track surges forward again into a second drop, this time with an even sharper bite.
