Klaudia, thanks for agreeing to this interview. It was such a pleasure to record your mix to share with the public. 

How was the transition from Jasmin to Andromeda?

I started playing with my middle name Jasmin while studying at University in Leeds and becoming part of a thriving scene that was the perfect breeding ground for aspiring artists. I was drawn by the raw and classic sounds of acid house and Detroit techno and after moving to London, I started to get introduced to the techno scene through events such as Unmasked, On The 5th Day and Koodeta. The turning point was when I performed for the first time at HTBX and got introduced to a scene that was different to anything I had ever experienced before. Playing vinyl sets to a hedonistic crowd that was hungry for the heavier stuff really inspired me to dig deeper and find records that expressed my darker side. I decided to start a new project that would represent my alter-ego by embodying the character of ‘The Chained Woman’ from Greek mythology, Andromeda. It was a spontaneous transition that gave me a chance to reinvent my public persona by playing under an alias that is a metaphysical representation of my higher self. 

As a regular at unfold, how do you find the booth being in the middle of the room?

I think that the 360 degrees DJ booth is a great concept that creates an intimate atmosphere by removing the barrier between the crowd and the performer. It makes you feel more connected with the crowd by being on the same level on the dancefloor. It was the first time that I played on such a setup and I could really feel the energy of the room all the way through, it was magical.

Do you prepare your set in a different way when you play in the round?

I don’t think that the DJ setup has an effect on the way I prepare for my sets but playing in the round can encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and play tracks that you might have not played otherwise. For example I ended up playing ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’ which wasn’t planned but it fit the moment perfectly and many people were coming up to me and commenting about that particular track which wasn't on my original tracklist. I also played some dialogue from the matrix during the breakdown of one of the tracks which was a very transcendental moment. 

It was great to make you our latest resident at FOLD. Have you held a residency at a club before?

It is an honour to be one of the residents at FOLD and I feel extremely lucky to be part of such a ground-breaking institution. I was first made resident of an event called Flux in Leeds in 2010 which became one of the most popular student nights in the city. I was also a regular at one of the most legendary clubbing institutions in the world, Back to Basics, where I hosted the second room and played alongside legendary artists such as Derrick May, Carl Craig, Chez Damier and many others. I organised my own events in London for many years after that where I played as a resident and hosted radio shows on stations such as Hoxton FM, Bloop and Soho Radio. 

What do you see as a unique challenge to being a resident DJ? Do you try to do a different set each time or is there not enough time in between shows to do that effectively? 

I think the biggest challenge of a resident is to maintain a consistent sound and at the same surprise the crowd every time you perform by making sure that each set is memorable. I spend most of my spare time searching for music and I buy new tracks before every performance in order to deliver a unique performance that is specifically tailored to that moment in time. As a perfectionist, I always strive to make each set better than the previous one and the challenge of trying to achieve that is what gets me excited about performing. Having a residency makes it possible to grow and develop your skills as an artist by delivering quality sets on a regular basis and becoming part of an institution that trusts and believes in you.

FOLD Invites Andromeda + Interview

In these harder times, music with a strong feeling to it is even more critical to us. Therefore, April's podcast is mixed by the intriguing and Romanian: Aleksa Alaska (@aleksaalaska).

Even by the standards of 21st-century electronic music culture, Aleksa Alaska's rise to international DJ status has been dizzyingly rapid. After deciding in early 2016 to devote more time to recording mixes, the Bucharest-based artist has quickly become one of the most talked-about radio hosts, selectors and club DJs in Europe.

Although a passionate fan of intriguing, alternative and experimental sounds for over a decade, Aleksa (real name Alexa Chirnoaga) had little inclination to take up DJ-ing when she was younger. After growing up in a sleepy part of Northern Romania, she headed to Bucharest to study visual art (with a specialism in photography) and threw herself into the city’s party scene. As the years passed, Aleksa found that her interest in intense, eccentric and otherworldly music from the ‘90s was out of step with the “Rominimal” minimal techno scene, and a desire to do her own thing and share the music she loved grew by the year.

Before she’d even set foot in a DJ booth, Aleksa had already built up an online following. Initially, this was thanks to her YouTube channel, where she shared favourite tracks plucked from obscure 1980s electronic music releases on a weekly basis. Soon, online radio stations and websites started requesting mixes. From fast-rising Bristol outlet Noods (@noodsradio; where she hosts the Subterranean Modern show, which is dedicated to showcasing abstract electronica and dark ‘80s industrial tracks plucked from dusty & cassette-only releases) and legendary Amsterdam institution Red Light Radio (@redlightradio), to NTS (@nts_live), Rinse France (@rinse_france), Intergalactic FM (@onderwereld), LYL (@lyl_radio) and Red Bull Radio.

Yet for all of her online fame and exploration of mind-altering home listening material, it is in the clubs that Aleksa is really making her mark. Here, she focuses on the more robust, energetic and forthright end of her music collection, performing sets that join the dots between EBM, acid, electro, techno and industrial stompers.

This she naturally does with flair and distinction, working dancefloors with sets marked out by inspired selections from the past and present. It’s an approach that has led to a bulging DJ diary and appearances at well-regarded clubs and festivals in Spain, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Study Aleksa’s list of previous and forthcoming dates and you’ll spot appearances at some legendary venues and festivals. There’s a feeling, though, that this is only the beginning for Aleksa and, spurred on by an unquenchable thirst for discovering new and overlooked music, the best is yet to come.

Hailing from Hertfordshire, England, Perc, aka Ali Wells, began his musical assault out of the Home Counties from a young age. Being in indie bands influenced by the likes of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Wonderstuff at the age of 13, Perc was a self-confessed indie kid until the age of 16. Awakened to the sounds of the burgeoning '90s rave scene by his older brother, Perc left the guitars behind and began DJ'ing -- he also bought his first drum machine (a Roland TR626) the day after his GCSE results. At 18, he left the southeast and began a course on sound engineering at Newcastle University, where he started to produce techno influenced by producers Carl Cox and Jeff Mills. Teaming up with a fellow student, he became part of DriveSpace, his first electronic outfit. Shortly after finishing his degree, he moved to London and began performing and recording under the name Perc.

In 2002, he released his debut single, “I Make Nuclear,” on the Easy Space label, as well as releasing a couple of 12”s on Premier Sounds in 2003. In 2004, he created his own label, Perc Trax, and between then and 2012 saw releases coming from the likes of Sawf, Truss, Forward Strategy Group, Ekoplekz, and Perc himself. Throughout the latter part of the 2000s, Perc Trax established itself as the dark and hypnotic purveyor of driving techno and deep tech grooves. Perc himself described his own sound as “Droney, industrial-tinged techno. A mixture of 4/4 and broken beat stuff,” and declared himself a fan of early industrial and post-punk, with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle being major influences.

In 2009, he released "Throb" on Ovum and "Submit" on CLR, but it was his 2010 release, "Monad V" on Stroboscopic Artefacts, that made techno aficionados sit up and take notice of his productions. A major draw on the European and world techno live circuit for fearless DJ sets and his live act, he released his debut album, Wicker & Steel, in 2011. The album fused occult and pagan mystery -- as well as '70s British horror films -- with punishing, chopped, and pounding drum-driven techno, and was described by Guardian scribe Tony Naylor as “a bleak audio montage of modern Britain.” It went on to be featured on many end-of-the-year best-of lists. The track “My Head Is Slowly Exploding” was remixed by Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter and techno legends Ancient Methods. Such collaborations cemented Perc's status as one of the torch bearers for the future of modern techno.

Singles and EPs continued on Perc Trax, Sleaze Records, and Stroboscopic (a split 12" with Xhin) in 2012. In 2013, Perc collaborated with Adam X (aka Traversable Wormhole) under the name AX&P; an EP titled Ampere&Ohm was released on a label of the same name. Perc also released Spiker, the first of several collaborations with Truss, in addition to issuing an EP of his remixes of tracks by Einstürzende Neubauten, Interpretations. Perc's second full-length The Power & the Glory arrived in 2014, receiving much critical acclaim. Additional 12"s followed on Perc Trax and Stroboscopic, in addition to collaborations with Randomer, Passarella Death Squad, and further work with Truss and Adam X. Perc's third album, Bitter Music, arrived in 2017.

DEAD CERT. Records is a label linked to the well known website deathtechno.com ran by Jack! Who? in the UK. A diverse palette has seen previous releases feature music from artists including Paul Mac, TWR72, Echoplex, Eomac and Petter B.

Aleksandar Grum aka Vakat is also known as Redial Tone who hails from Montenegro and returns with this new project following outings on Marcelus' Singular Records in Paris, and the Spanish stronghold Subsist.

"Switch" kicks things off with a raw, angular jam, wrapped in analogue grit and infectious electronic funk that tears forward with a jovial heart at its core.

Second up is "Thrill" that opts for a moodier approach. The rolling bottom end, pulsing phasers and deep chords add a menacing sensitivity to its otherwise energetic framework.

"Locked" is a slick and jackin' affair of raw modular tones that's dripping in 909 flavour and functionality at its best, with one thing in mind, to make you move.

Showing his production skills in full effect, "Flame" is a lesson in abstract grooves and rich sound design, for those who like raunchy, heady techno full of character and creativity.
