For 30 years, the six-member DJ and production collective, Jazzanova, has been highly influential, artfully bridging the worlds of jazz, soul, and world into a fusion of modern sounds that have delighted ears and feet through the years. 

My first introduction was listening to “Coffee Talk,” a downtempo tune whose debut on Los Angeles radio station KCRW was the start of a music trajectory that would see the group through many top-notch remixes, several studio albums, a number of special music projects, and, now, coming full circle with a live version of its 2001 debut, “In Between.” “In Between Revisited” finds Jazzanova in a live session, with an intimate audience, surfacing ack to the tunes from its 2001 album, but giving it an updated flair. 

To celebrate “IN Between Revisited,” I did an early July all-vinyl set at Jan’s Vinyl Bar in San Luis Obispo, where the owners are fans too and where I spin about 1-2 times monthly. It was an honor to do so, and so great to pull out vinyl from my radio show days, when the music was fresh. It stands up very well today.

With that, I hope you enjoy the mix that I have for you: two hours of Jazzanova, along with friends, from vocalists to producers remixing Jazzanova. There was only so much that two hours could fit in, but here it is.

Skate Muzik is an independent project by Gianluca Quagliano, exploring the soundtracks, stories and cultural language of skate videos.


This episode is dedicated to Jazzmatazz Vol. 1, Guru’s groundbreaking project that bridged jazz and hip hop with depth and integrity. 


The mix weaves together key tracks from the album alongside the records sampled within the project, tracing the musical roots behind its sound. 


The episode also features an interview with Keith Elam, Guru’s son, offering a personal perspective on his father’s legacy and the cultural impact of Jazzmatazz. A tribute to vision and timeless music.

For almost twenty years the eclectic collective from Berlin has been busy producing, composing, arranging, remixing, djing and generally shaping our musical world – in the clubs, on the air, in the studio, live on stage, and with their label Sonar Kollektiv.

Their “very fertile musical world” (Time Out New York) “has dominated the jazz-dance and down-tempo scenes for the past few years, both with its own label and with countless remixes” (Phoenix New Times).

Spreading their sounds and ideas with inspired DJ sets, Jazzanova’s DJs were among the first DJs from Berlin in demand all around the world. Juergen von Knoblauch, Alex Barck and Claas Brieler broaden the music’s appeal as DJs, not only on tour through the best clubs and festivals around the world but also on their weekly Kaleidoskop radio show on Radio1.

5YRS WEDDING SOUL

Five years of WEDDING SOUL, we look back on so far 60 shows of this small big event series. The jubilee is now celebrated according to the mood, with a two-day program, with exquisite guests, representing what WEDDING SOUL is: a well thought-out mixture of soul and funk-inspired music culture, the roots of these in the back, the present and the future in view. Always danceable and audible, surprising, new, and yet as if there had never been anything other than a connection between heart, dance, and soul.
