This revolutionary step in vinyl history features the production skills of Saoirse, Reptant, Sansibar, Pugilist, LUXE and Hassan Abou Alam.

For Needs 009 we welcome another all-star lineup of producers, established and emerging, from around the world. Featuring room 1 ready techno from one of the scenes leading lights Saoirse; a bass heavy, electro-tech weapon from Melbourne's Pugilist; the cosmic electro baselines of the irrepressible Reptant; an otherworldly space excursion courtesy of Norway’s finest Sansibar; dancehall inflected acid trance from London-based up and comer LUXE; and to round things off some twisted breaky tech-house from Egypt’s latest export Hassan Abou Alam.

THE PROBLEM
With 4.3m vinyl sales in the UK last year (the 12th consecutive year of growth), it’s clear that vinyl is back in a BIG way. But the basic technological principles of record pressing have not changed for a century. While the vinyl boom has been a bright spot for physical media lovers and the record industry alike, pressing vinyl poses a more urgent environmental concern than it did in the format’s heyday. At times, the process can seem almost antithetical to green living. Records are made of PVC, which comes from refined oil and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. Traditional pressing machines are powered by steam boilers that require fossil fuels to generate heat and pressure; the water used is treated with anti-corrosive chemicals in order to prevent rusting, thus creating more wastewater. And that’s just the pressing procedure.

Consider, then, vinyl’s packaging and distribution. The ink that’s used to print cover art and liner notes is traditionally solvent-based, meaning it contains volatile organic compounds that can contribute to the production of ozone. Once the record is encased in a beautiful jacket, it’s then shrink-wrapped in plastic wrap before boarding a gas-burning, carbon-emitting truck to ship. Suddenly the choice to buy physical music shifts from an action that helps sustain an artist’s career, to one that potentially threatens broader sustainability.

THE SOLUTION
In 2019 Needs started conversations with Green Vinyl, a brand new pressing plant based in Holland, who have devised a revolutionary production method which uses injection moulding rather than steam energy, equalling 60% less energy cost than the traditional vinyl production. It also uses no PVC and is a 100% recyclable product, meaning you can dispose of it in your home recycling bin.

The other benefits are that the record sounds better (it has a wider frequency spectrum), it cannot warp, and it also has a longer play life.

The key features of a Green Vinyl produced record are:

Daniel's slew of self-releases and contributions to local labels like @innertheft and international labels likle @pokeyprods are all killer and his mixes are just as good, with the @bizarro-recs mix being one highlight. UK producer BufoBufo (Ritual Poison / Batrachian Records) brings his amphibious sound to the growing Scottish Highland based label. The ‘Potholing’ EP takes its name from the definition of ‘underground cave exploration’, with three original tracks that pull you further into the deep, dark sounds of underground rave.

‘Cave Network’ sets the tone for the EP, immersed in acid-like textures, deep sweeping pads and interchanging breaks rhythms. Second in is ’Giant Antlion’ with cosmic style analog arp’s that lift towards a hefty breaks / bass combo, then ‘Blue Demoiselle’ takes you back to the surface with a rolling breaks number smothered in dreamlike pads and uplifting melodics. DJ GIRL’s latest EP on Planet Euphorique “Slsk Trax” shows us how it’s done with four head-turning techno-transanthems, bass bins bursting at the seams with fast & furious innovative aural onslaught. The Chicago based producer offering no zoom, main room, (more than) four to the floor visceral punishment of the highest pleasures. 

Immediate assault in the form of A1; “And the Crowd Howls” unstoppable rapid, rhythmic voltage racing through your veins, pulsating like the most dramatic, dark dancefloors should. Sliced with electro injections interrupting the hypnotizing drumwork, snapping you in and out of altered states, invoking vivid imagery of flickering smoke and sweat. Following the intoxicating opener, “The Runaround'' beams up to otherworldly tech-territory, a deliciously syncopated bass line rumbling below disciplined running snares, DJ GIRL eradicating expectations, her addictive percussive spontaneity and mutation of conventional structure nothing short of exhilarating. 

A 7 minute “Tunnel Vision” initiation on the B side starts with swirled panned percussion, a gritty foundation paving the way for scorched screeches and additional demented drums demanding your undivided attention. Rising and dropping, a fluidity and expertise in tension with subtlety amongst the filth. Closing up shop and slamming the door is the B2 “Untitled”, a fierce electro encore. Minimalistic instrumentation turns into an encompassing sphere of sonic evolution through processing and modulation. Metallic delays flair and decay over squelched tones and boot stomping kicks and claps.

PE014 comes dripping in saturation, DJ GIRL’s Detroit roots are infused into the indisputable groove seeping through the record, elevated by her subliminal, sapphic style, a personal touch that unleashes the freakiest of dancers.

New school kosmiche style guitar and synth studies by Baltimore native and veteran underground music figure Tarotplane (PJ Dorsey). Across four cold, motorik movements Dorsey builds upon previous outings for Aguirre, Lullabies For Insomniacs and VG+ on the discs A side, combining trademark lysergic keyboard swirls with a heavier rhythmic approach than usual. On the B, he delivers an extended swan song for 12th Isle's single figure catalog and aims his guitar towards the heart of the sun, kick-starting the labels busiest year to date.

A bold and refined body of work, Brain Dance is a masterclass in brooding high-energy techno. Blending sombre tonal palettes with intricate driving percussion, Posture has crafted a suite of 4 peak-set techno cuts that retain a delicate, fluid energy throughout.

Written in isolation, Brain Dance is pensive in its mood while remaining wholly inspired by dance floor energies from past and future - a record that invites introspection in the peak of dance floor hypnosis.
