VeloVelo - Live @ NASP - New Years Eve Party

After a crazy year, the city is brewing with new energy. This set was brought to life at a private rooftop event celebrating New York's comeback, and welcoming the summer months. 

I wanted to express New York's diversity by selecting songs from around the world. It celebrates sounds from South Africa, Bulgaria, Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Spain, Italy, France, and of course the US from the West Coast to the deep South. 

The mood is upbeat and bouncy, and works both for daytime and night-time vibes. Hope that you enjoy it, and that you have a wonderful start to the summer!

VeloVelo - Back in NY

This set was recorded live at closing night of the NASP Summer Camp - an intimate community gathering and music festival curated to bring joy and connection to all its participants. 

This was a very special night for me. Musically, I decided to play a world music set that primarily showcased the US musical repertoire(jazz, funk, blues, disco). My hope was to convey that the US has beautiful music that can be appreciated in the same way that we do with genres from all over the world. 

The experience of playing this set was memorable. Because it was a later time than I'm used to (2-3 am)I leaned into more progressive electronic sounds that produced very embodied effects. In some tracks, for example, I imagined the music would make people hug, and - when in fact they did - the feeling on my end was amazing. 

It's been amazing to receive the support of people from all over the world on this new path for me. It has been very humbling, rewarding and encouraging. If you're reading this - thank you. I mean it. 

Anyways! Enjoy this live set!

VeloVelo - Live @ NASP Camp 2021

So happy to share this live set, played at the cusp of summer! Had an amazing time selecting this daytime-into-sunset grooves at the beautiful Lightning Society Lofts in Brooklyn, for their rooftop event: Garden Grooves. 

This set should be good to play on most occasions, from park hangs to rooftop gatherings. Enjoy, and please drop comments and notes if you want to have a chat!

VeloVelo - Live @ Lightning Society - Garden Groove

Very happy to share this set with you. This live selection was performed at the Beyond The Veil party in New York. At around 110 bpm the groove aims to create a vibe where people can dance, but also connect and enjoy the music.

The mix includes beautiful words sampled from Beatriz Nascimiento and Jorge Luis Borges, and acts from Brasil, South Africa, US, Lebanon, Morroco, and more! 

Feeling more confident in incorporating a larger section of my library - and excited to continue sharing more music with you all - wherever you are :)

VeloVelo - Live @ Beyond the Veil

This set means a lot to me. It was the opening performance for the new year's celebration at Eagle's Nest in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The event was put together by the beautiful Octave Collective (thanks @karlimusik) and gathered some of my best friends from around the world. 

For this end of year, I had just come from processing a difficult time with my mom's health, and wanted to deliver a musical experience that celebrated her. For this reason, notice the two audio clips at the beginning and end of the set. The first, an invocation to teachers in our life called Sri Guru Pranam. My mom has taught me so much, and I dedicate my creative expression to her. It reads:

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master, who has opened my eyes, which were blinded by the darkness of ignorance, with the torchlight of knowledge."

The last track is a song I would play to her at the hospital. It's one of the most beautiful songs I know. It records the musical collaborations of cellist David Darling with the Wulu Bunun tribes of Taiwan. The song gives me hope of a better future, and always puts a smile on my face. 

Right before it, the second audio sample is a voice note I received the day before I last visited my mom back in Colombia. May this year carry her voice, and all of ours, together forward.

VeloVelo - Sunset @ Snugz / Burning Man 2022 feat. Lauren Ducrey

Wow, it's been a while since I posted some music to listen here. Feels good to share some progress representing where I've been at over the last few months. 

In the process of healing from a breakup, and taking care of myself I decided to travel the world in search of music, art, healing, and community. Lived in a hut in the Colombian jungle, played cool house parties in Mexico city, and eventually life took me to the beautiful ancestral city of Essaouira, in Morocco. 

Essaouira is the capital of Gnawa music. If you haven't explored it already, please go to google search and enjoy both the classics as well as the newer artists safekeeping this beautiful, spiritual musical tradition. Look up Omar Hayat, Innov Gnawa, and Mahmoud Gineya.

In Essaouira, through a series of amazing experiences and people, I was inspired to lean more into my own musical voice - and select tunes that were more aligned with the musical diversity that I want to advocate for in this world. I owe a lot of the inspiration here to my brother https://soundcloud.com/i_varlam - a pure soul and talented producer with whom together we expanded our boundaries. 

Also very grateful to https://soundcloud.com/maxsolely, who brought the sound and the inspiration time and time again. During one month in Essaouira, we experimented, performed, had fun, and most importantly supported each other in a musical friendship. 

This set is a collage of those moments, those memories, and those people. 

The set starts at 90 bpm, featuring an beautiful opening track by Domenique Dumont, layered with some recordings I took from the birds outside my hut in Colombia - and it ends around 122 bpm with some shimmers of Moroccan Gnawa, afro-caribbean compositions by David Walters, and a killer closer by Analog Jungs, a duo from Argentina.

VeloVelo presents: Experiments In Essaouira

Excited to share a new set mixed at home. The effort here was to push my technical boundaries and try some new experiments that I would be far too nervous to perform live. There are some mistakes in it, but that's part of the beauty - Learning to be ok with certain imperfections showing up as I continue developing this craft.

VeloVelo - Lateralis

Recording from a special night at CAMP - a co-created, participatory music and arts festival near New York City. I had the opportunity to lead the musical creative direction and programming for this year's event, and was overcome with joy to witness so many different musicians coming together to share their gifts. 

This set was re-recorded, as the original file from the live event got unfortunately lost. For it, I had the amazing opportunity to co-create live with poet and performer Lauren Ducrey, and with the limitlessly creative and talented guitarist and vocalist, Mendeleyev. 

The journey takes us through some of my favorite selections of genre-bending acts in the downtempo global downtempo landscape.
