As I watched the personification of evil and suffering on the screen I dropped to my knees. My heart was filled with pain and passion but I lacked the means to do anything about it. At first, I despaired. Then I picked up my guitar and cried out these lyrics to God with a melody and three simple chords (G,C,D). I recorded it today. It’s called “Ukraine”. 

God hears and answers prayer in ways that confound human understanding. Especially when His people are united in songs of praise. (Please see II Chronicles 20:21-22.)  Imagine the power we could unleash if hundreds of churches added this song to their worship service this Sunday.  

I implore you to listen, sing along and above all please share it with everyone! 

Here’s an opportunity for us all to put “legs” on our words of love and do our part, in the Spirit, to put an end to the madness in Ukraine.

His heart grew heavy and His head bowed down
He knew they looked but they never really saw Him

Writing songs started for me when I was about 14 years old. Most of the songs presented here were written exclusively by me, others were co-writes. Some of the songs are studio produced, some are "live" and some are still in idea form recorded on an iPhone.  I will list production info, the appropriate credits along with lyrics in the days ahead.

My journey began troubled in an environment void of God, though I had unexplainable encounters with the divine throughout my earliest days. Those encounters led to a dramatic experience in New York City in 1971 that changed my life forever. 

Many of these songs grew out of that experience. The arrangements are dated but the lyrics and “touch” on them still channels the life and perspective of the Holy Spirit of Jesus who inspired me to write them.

For reasons far too complex to express here I left active participation in the “organization” of Christianity and many of these songs represent that turbulent season of departure.  

Some are rough, some lyrics are explicit expressed in the vernacular of the day. Some display anger associated with betrayal, church hypocrisy and the personal frustration of trying to attain righteousness which is unattainable by design.

Through the years all roads have led me back to Jesus and this latest season of writing is no exception. The newer songs represent a balance of heavenly life (we are seated there) and worldly involvement (we live here). We need both to be effective until we pass.

I have entered into my seventy first lap around the Sun.  I’ve learned I’m still learning to learn and other than my amazing wife, regardless of church affiliation, Jesus is and will always be the glue that holds me together. 

I turned seventy years young as of Sept. 2021. Who knows how much time is left for anyone after seventy. 

These songs are here for anyone who wants to hear or perform them. 

But they are especially here to represent part of my legacy for my grandchildren, their children and beyond.  Though I may not be able to show them who I am directly, web platforms like these will out live me and serve as a portal into the heart and mind of one of their ancestors. Hopefully it will positively shape who and what they become as I watch from above.
