“Warm Leatherette” has fascinated me for years. Originally released in 1978 by The Normal, it was a groundbreaking piece of electronic minimalism with a punk edge, laying the foundation for its transformation by Grace Jones in 1980. Her cover on the album "Warm Leatherette" reimagined the track with her unmistakable style, turning it into a classic. Over the years, the song has seen various interpretations, including a 1995 dance version by Peter Rauhofer and a subsequent remix by Danny Tenaglia. In my version, I aimed to reconnect with the song’s depth and raw energy, bringing it back to its core essence.

When I decided to include "Warm Leatherette" on my album "The Afterlife," I knew I had to create something distinct. I started by revisiting the original's core beat—a sort of heartbeat that is slightly off rhythm—and placed it at the centre of my version. This approach allowed me to craft a sound that is neither purely disco nor a replica of any previous versions. Instead, I aimed to capture the song's dark, driving momentum and translate its narrative of a car crash into a visceral musical experience. By experimenting with deeper vocal registers and adding a more melodic touch, I sought to complement the intense energy of the instrumentation, creating a version that is both familiar and refreshingly new. This process was not just about reimagining a classic, but about exploring my own artistic growth and the boundaries of musical expression .
