Quadrant Soundscape presents In Focus 007

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

Mary Yuzovskaya's mix for Delayed captures her defining approach to techno: raw, hypnotic, and unhurried. As a vinyl-only DJ with roots in Berlin's techno underground and a significant stretch in New York's scene, she shapes her music with precision, offering an hour-long set that feels both intimate and intense. This mix is crafted for those who get lost in the beat, whether booming from Berghain's Funktion-One system or spinning in your headphones on a midnight walk.

During her years in NYC, Mary's sound took on new depth, honed through a three-year residency with the Unter collective and work at Brooklyn's Halcyon record shop, where she later launched her label, Monday Off. Dedicated to "psychedelic techno," Monday Off became a home for artists who push beyond the genre's usual limits. Through her label, Mary has amplified a vision of techno that doesn't rely on trends but thrives on nuance and a deliberate, mind-bending drive.

Back in Berlin, Mary's reach grows, with regular gigs at clubs like Berghain and Tresor or Munich's Rote Sonne, NYC's Basement, and releases on respected labels like Semantica, Attic, Kvalia, and her own Monday Off. This mix for Delayed shows how she keeps the music tightly focused yet open to exploration—an hour that reflects her journey, rooted in vinyl and built for techno's true devotees.

Árpád Horváth, aka HORI, has been a dedicated observer of the underground electronic music scene since the 90s. As a DJ and promoter, he focuses on the bigger picture, filling gaps in the scene with fresh, truly underground music rather than following trends. 

With over 25 years behind the decks, he gravitates toward psychedelic and hypnotic sounds, constantly pushing beyond the mainstream in search of deeper sonic experiences.

A passionate and versatile DJ, HORI favors B-sides and moves seamlessly between turntables and digital decks. Having lived in Serbia, Hungary, the UK, and now Malta, his time in London deeply influenced his approach, making his style fluid and genre-defying. Currently, he promotes and DJs deep, dub, and spherical techno, curating podcast series and shaping the deeper electronic music scene in Malta and beyond under @nexus_xmt

"Deep Currents" perfectly captures the essence of the experience HORI aimed to create. Like the unseen forces beneath the ocean’s surface shaping the world in subtle yet profound ways, this mix is designed to take you on a journey beneath the surface of sound and dance. Working her way in the gap betwixt post-industrial opacity and heavy-duty brutalism, Mari has been slowly but surely making a name for herself with uncompromising sets spanning everything from cool-handed big room pound to mazy abstraction and other bursts of mind-altering sonics from way deep. Known for cutting a path of destruction with every of her mixes, her RYC offering doesn’t depart from such intentions, and we’re invited to a smorgasbord of claustrophobic hi-tech onslaughts and a string of purely exhilarating, apex-seeking momentums. Countless gigs, in many corners of the European continent, from small private gatherings in the woods to Ozora Festival, have distilled a very distinct sound that rings true to Anders innermost core.
