Experts have often had great difficulty distinguishing A V A in humans and other primate brains from the substantia nigra (SN) and surrounding nuclei. Originally, A V A  was designated as a ‘nucleus’, but over time ‘area’ became the more appropriate term used because of the heterogeneous musical features of the group and the lack of clear scores and rigid structures that separate it from more experimental forms of expression. Because of the selective performative interaction methods of A V A, the cells of the VTA are given the designation progressive-hypnotic-ballad-keller to differentiate them from surrounding cells.
