VELLE - At Your Side [Premiere]

Before she was Femanyst, Akua Grant was called The Lady Blacktronika, also known as the First Lady Of Beatdown. Beatdown was a type of of ultra-deep house characterized by creamy chords, soulful melodies and, in Grant's case, honeyed vocals. She ran an integral label called Sound Black Recordings, home to some of her best tracks. But around 2017, she turned towards what was essentially the polar opposite: industrial-tinged super hard techno, full of distortion and anger.

This is where we find Grant now, as Femanyst, with a mix that shows off heavy-duty techno that still has a heart. She started her own new label, called Dark Carousel, and has released on Paula Temple's Noise Manifesto. She manages to take some of the hardest techno around and imbue it with her signature melodic style. This is probably one of the toughest RA Podcasts yet, but it's also full of feeling, dynamism and tension. Get your best listening setup ready and sink in for two hours.

This mix delivers heavy bass, textural percussion, hypnotic electro and jungle, as well as a few bouncy hip-hop and RnB edits. I tend to curate my mixes with the dancefloor at the center of my attention. Although this mix aims to make you move, it is a bit more contemplative and nostalgic stemming from my own current desire for pause and attention to the current moment.

lexa.llo is a Brooklyn-based, self-taught DJ and Designer. She is a co-founder to the Boston-based collective fdec_records. She derives much of her influences from the soul, jazz, and hip-hop scene of the South, while continually evolving with the techno and house scene of Brooklyn. From Charlotte, to Boston, to New York City, her inspirations, influences, and technique is constantly changing with her location.

Wright spent most of their teen years immersed in the sounds of house music and this mix oozes exactly that. Their unique perspective on dance music is just the refresher to lift us up. On their favorite track: The track I would like to highlight is the Serge G. 'Work It Out (DJ Holographic Remix)'. Alinka & I released it a few months ago on Twirl and it's a total family affair and a banger! I met Serge quite a few years ago when he was still residing in Stockholm, via an old friend from NYC. He's contributed remixes on Twirl before. He's also featured me in a short film he created "A Child Of House: Shaun J. Wright", that includes some of my closest friends in the world; the eternal Aerea Negrot, Alinka, Jacob Meehan, Madison More and Sir Jacobs. DJ Holographic is one of my dearest friends and having her join the Twirl musical family feels so appropriate. It's always a blessing to collaborate with people you love and admire.

3 hr mix created on a late afternoon in February by Tay and I. the idea was to have my choices accompany Tay's selections, which we explored upon until about 50 minutes left where I began to drive the bus. this mix journeys across different black dance music genres and forms of ambient and classical music. each set was recorded on our separate software simultaneously.
