"I don't complain, I create." The house DJ talks about her new multi-platform project, Honeyverse, and using music as a way to celebrate the Black queer community.

Honey Dijon is a queer house music icon whose reputation precedes her. Originally hailing from Chicago, she grew up experiencing the city's nightlife, eventually beginning to DJ and produce alongside contemporaries like Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and other artists who shaped the Chicago house music canon.

Throughout her career, she's been an active spokesperson for trans rights and a champion for the BIPOC community, and last month she put on her greatest platform for queer Black culture to date: Honeyverse. The multi-platform Honey Dijon experience took place at London's Southbank Centre, bringing club nights, live sets, orchestras and intimate conversations together in a takeover that drew its inspiration from her roots in Chicago's Black queer community.

In this RA Exchange live from Southbank Centre, Honey Dijon talks to Josh Caffé about her connection to house music, an art form made from rejection and thus marginalised in the annals of music history. Her work, she says, is about giving visibility to the voices that were lost in its development and creating a more expansive platform for queer artists from the Black and Latinx diaspora. "This is a celebration of love, joy and acceptance," she says of Honeyverse.

TRAXSOURCE LIVE! Sessions #256 - Philippa

The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. In a city that prides itself on fast walking, fast talking and, as of late, fast BPMs, their music is an invitation to ease into a more relaxing pace.

This RA Podcast comes at a golden time for MUSCLECARS. In May, they released their RA-recommended debut album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea!, whose sultry (and undeniably catchy) lead single "Tonight" has gotten the stamp of approval, and a remix, from New York legend Louie Vega. And this Sunday, they hosted their annual Juneteenth block party outside the Lot Radio, where scores of Black dancers latched onto one another during sets from a multigenerational crew of Black DJs including Ron Trent, Lovie, Shawn Dub and MUSCLECARS themselves. This two-hour-plus mix takes us through the spiralling jazz of Herbie Hancock, the flashy disco of The Originals and lands us, finally, in "Water," the track that also closes out Sugar Honey Iced Tea!.

DJ, radio show host, producer and in-demand resident DJ, CJ Cooper has been DJing across the UK and Ibiza for nearly 20 years. 

He’s best known for his long-standing nine-year residency at The Eagle in London, the legendary LGBT+ venue. And let’s face it, you know you’re doing something very very right when the other residents include Horse Meat Disco. 

Residencies have played a big part in CJ Cooper’s success to date. Alongside his regular slots at The Eagle, he’s also a resident DJ for the Brighter Days crew, playing at their sold-out parties for five years across Cambridge, Ibiza and London. 

Musically, CJ Cooper spans the best of disco, house and soulful house - from upfront edits and releases to crate-digging for long-lost classics. And they’re all present and correct on his weekly prime-time Wednesday night slot on D3EP Radio 

Away from his weekly and monthly gigs, CJ Cooper is increasingly in demand across the rest of the UK. 

He’s a firm favourite at the long-running Brixton Disco Festival having been booked for the last two years while he’s also recently played for We Out Here Festival and Cambridge Pride. 

Equally at home playing main-stage festival slots as well as intimate club gigs, other high-profile gigs including playing for Hed Kandi, the House and Classics Festival, plus several Ibiza gigs at Es Paradis, Ibiza Rocks Hotel and the Wiki Woo sunset bar. 

And memorably, it was while playing at Up on the Roof at the Prince of Wales in Brixton that The Shapeshifters called his warm-up ‘one of the best they’d ever heard.’ 

Not just a DJ and radio show host, CJ Cooper is a producer with a growing reputation having released four tracks on OPOM, Plastik People, Friday Fox Recordings and Electric Friends. 

With the world opening up once more and with disco at the forefront of the party, expect to hear a lot more from CJ Cooper in the near future.
