Right before I had three distributors in a row go out of business on me, I planned to start a label called Black Art. I have always had a love for the skills that can only be learned "off the grid". Sadly, the label never got off the ground, but this banger was one track that was to be released on it.

Acid Machine was my first record. Released in 1994. I spent a week at Woody McBride's place in Minneapolis and recorded in his studio that he shared with DJ Slip and Feed.  

I left the original DAT at the mastering studio, so I have ripped these off vinyl. I have done a little mastering to get them to a decent level.

This was in the old tracks archive called just "frankie" 
I believe this was recorded in Studio A at StudioChicago in the late 90s. I was a staff recording engineer and would bring in a couple synths and drum machines at night and record through the SSL 4056 with nice effects. It's probably just a TR-909 and Korg MS-50 controlled by ARP sequencer.

I had a 300GB hard disk fail and I lost every track I had ever recorded. In a panic I contacted all the people I had mailed CDs to and tried to get them back. This track was #4 on the CD I gave to Tim Xavier. It was never released.

Rush and I did some tracks together in the "D" Room at StudioChicago, back in 2000. Rush had Christoph at Dubplates and Mastering cut 2 dubplates of these 3 tracks, one for himself and one for me. I proceeded to then lose the master and they have since only existed on these 2 dubplates. These were staples of our sets for years. I present them in all their flawed glory, right off the dubplate.

This is a track off my 1998 album "Simple Answers." For a moment there, my dad thought I was seriously in the music business because he bought my CD at Best Buy. The label went to shit very shortly after that and my career went back to being "screwing around" by his standards.

Mark Verbos -  Torn Cones

In 1998 I did an album for X-Sight. The first single got lost in a ludicrous major label black hole until 2001 when "Big Brother" appeared as a 12" with remixes. The Semblance Factor remix was the toast of the most famous German Techno DJs (Sven Väth, Monika Kruse, Tom Wax, etc.) then rapidly the label went out of business and the record became unobtainable. John Selway and I have since put together 2 releases of remixes of the song, but never included his original very popular version.

Mark Verbos - Big Brother (John Selway's Semblance Factor Remix)

In 2006 Djax-Up-Beats did a remix EP of Mike Dearborn's track "Birds On E." This is an acid classic from his 1995 doublepack, "Moments." Of course no original parts to the track existed, so I recreated the 1 beat acid line and made a beating hard acid workout. Sadly, my mix didn't make the EP. Here it is, and since it contains nothing from the original anyway, it is essentially an original track of mine.

I did this set in my studio "live to tape," using the usual suspects of analog hardware. A bunch of Roland boxes, Korg MS-10, maybe some others I'm forgetting. No edits, not trick photography.

Verbos - Reclaiming the Past

Binge & Purge is the name of the first project I did in collaboration with Tommie Sunshine. We released a doublepack on Mental Groove from Switzerland in 2001, called "Wait, It's Fantastic." Although considered a classic by some people, it remains generally unknown. I did this remix of "Baby (You're mine)" from that record and it got lost in the shuffle of multiple release ideas that went nowhere. It is heard here for the first time.
