Ostalgia is Rhys Fulber’s second album for Sonic Groove following the success of last year’s Your Dystopia, My Utopia. Like its predecessor, it continues his interest in pushing new boundaries in industrial techno, with kicks and bass lines woven together with clinical precision to cause intense speaker pressure, and atmospheric synth lines that will dig deep inside your mind. The title and the original socialist realism mural on the cover refer to Ostalgie - a romantic nostalgia for the old but comforting ways of Communist East Germany - and a yearning for rigid systems after progression into the future has led to chaos and uncertainty. While the music on Ostalgia is at times a reflection of that chaos and uncertainty, it also refers to Rhys further exploring his Germanic ancestry.

And although the sledgehammer beats of 12 Steppes and Fission evoke
Rhys’ previous work with industrial pioneers Front Line Assembly, he is not simply paying homage to his past musical escapades here. This is
forward-looking music, not content with resting on any past ideologies.

“Inhabited Shadows” is the new album by pioneering, Berlin-based techno artist Headless Horseman. This is his most daring and emotional release to date: the culmination of live performance, studio experimentation, and global exploration.

A total sonic experience, “Inhabited Shadows” takes listeners on a deeply personal journey through Headless Horseman’s creative brain. Dark industrial synths and broken beats form the spinal cord. A spirit of lightness and compassion guides the way forward.

From its opening, the album sets hard edges and metallic surfaces against dense and delicate textures. A-tonal figures and percussive attacks merge with melodic flights and soulful rhythms. Classical counterpoint and cinematic soundscapes conspire together. The result is discordant joy.

Headless Horseman’s vitality comes from his determination to remain open and vulnerable as an artist. “Inhabited Shadows”, recorded over eight months in 2019, reflects a period of intensive growth. Each of its nine tracks ventures into uncharted territory, embracing many moods, changing climates, old ghosts, and new risks.

“Over years of trials and tribulations, music has been the antidote”, says Headless Horseman. “I’ve learned to live in shadows and darkness. Now I’m chipping off pieces of my shell and portraying directly how I feel without compromise. I still inhabit shadows, but I can move back and forth between darkness and light.”

@raiders_records has presented something really special here.  While we absolutely love this track by @jpeglove, we must emphasize that this entire 2-volume release is a top notch pivotal endeavor highlighting a nascent shift toward club culture being ruled more firmly under the female sphere.  

'Queens of Club' pays tribute to 'Queens of Baltimore', an early Bmore Club 12” from 2001 featuring recorded vocals by: Mz. Thang, Kotton the Cutie and Lady Shaunda.  (Side note:  Posse Up tried to contact these artists recently, if anyone knows how to reach them please let us know!).  

While 'Queens of Baltimore' put the women at the forefront, it was still distributed and produced by men.  Raider’s' 'Queens of Club' pays tribute to this early achievement while simultaneously 1UP’ing it as a project that is completely produced and managed by women.  The stereotype that producing is a man’s domain can be put to feckin rest as is a testament of the quality of this endeavor.      

While this follows the tradition of pioneering female producers – least we forget about Kemistry and Storm who co-founded Metalheadz, not to mention DJ Rap – it also serves as a reminder – since the very fact that such a project remains a rarity in 2020 mans that there is still werk 2 do.  

Posse Up salutes and welcomes female producers, label owners, deejays, and emcees.  We feel strongly that music is multi-dimensional, and that added depth is desperately needed, whether that's grounded in gender, sex, ethnicity, culture, social status or entire MF’ing species (yo shouts out to the extraterrestrial transgendered).  The more depth the better, especially in club genres that exhibit raw sexuality, such as: bmore / jersey club, miami bass, ghetto tech, ghetto house, vogue, etc., or music inspired by these genres.

Listening to Linja’s debut LP makes one think of Polish director Yuri Norstein’s gloomy melancholic (yet playful) movies, or perhaps just of a rainy day, or Chopin.

Velvet Noise is a collection of 7 experimental pieces made by Linja sometime around 2016-2017, using drum ma- chines and a lot of modular synthesisers.
The album is woven with Simple melodies that crack through the squeaks and the bleeps, eery pads that fill the voids all sorts of FX.
The atmosphere becomes filled with tension when it is playing in the room, as if something is clearly about to happen.

Linja’s album is not so easy to describe, and yet due to its coherence and storytelling it has a certain feel and per- sonality of a good book rather than just a record.
