I am working on a series of sculptural installations that draw upon the roots of all music and to the human perception of pitch. This group of sculptures uses carefully tuned gongs and chimes that offer a range of random and performance-based sounds in just-intonation, including low frequency sounds conducted directly into the body. In practice, this means that the random sounds produced by wind and by untrained people striking gongs all sound melodic because of the selection of notes and careful attention to just intonation.

Sound and Music Sculptures for the Fifth Space: Gong + Tenor

This planned artwork fills an acre or two of space in the tree canopy and below. Specially tuned chimes distributed in the treetops produce an acoustic visualization of wind patterns. As breezes move through the space, chimes and gongs are activated above, and directional sound makes the air movement apparent to those on the ground. The overhead sounds occur in the alto and soprano ranges. At ground level, human-activated chimes in the bass and tenor ranges harmonize and reinforce the higher frequencies. The crucial moment I am aiming for is when people hear the three-dimensional soundscape evolving overhead, feel welcomed back into the arboreal habitats that surrounded much of our evolution, feel compelled to make sounds of their own and find that the sounds they’re making harmonize with the sounds of the landscape. It is that instant of making a sound and finding that it ‘fits’ with the sounds nature is making that I want all of us to experience.

The Rift is an original composition for the fantasy adventure game, Epoch Legends. It was recorded at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London as a final project for the Masters in Scoring for Film, TV, and Video Games at the Berklee College of Music, Valencia Campus.

Take a sail down the Blue and White Nile as they pass through Khartoum, carrying with them an ancient history and a never-ending stream of poems and songs. Immerse in the endlessly gorgeous violin and accordion driven orchestral music of 1970’s Khartoum, and the synthesizer music of the late 1980s and early 1990s. 

We’re going to bring the enchanting violin harmonies, haunting synthesizer melodies, and relentless tum-tum rhythms of Khartoum’s golden cultural era, which captured the hearts and minds of post-colonial Africa and the Middle East, to the world later this year, fully remastered and licensed.
