Fun Facts:
I Pass You By was composed in July 1987 at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter.
It was inspired by the beautiful train journey from Exeter to Torquay.
This journey was George's occasional commute during that summer.
The sound of the train at the start was recorded one evening using two mics and an open window at 63 King Street, Exeter.
That particular property was very close to the main London to Penzance railway line.
It was probably the sound of a British Snail, er, Rail, Intercity 125.
Programming the Boss DR 220A drum machine probably took a long time.
I Pass You By was never included in the set of any band.

Honored to welcome recent LA arrival John Jones to the series for Volume 47. He records music solo as Nerftoss / AV Moves / Calvin, and is involved in a collaborative project called Geo Rip. This mix served as an exercise for him to find a meeting point between sounds that initially sparked his interest in the genre of electronic music in the early 2000’s, and the stuff him, his friends, and contemporaries are making now. A sentiment to a past self through moods and melodic elements.

Volume 47: John Jones

Ardor is the brilliant collaborative effort of Canadian sound artists B.P. and Body of Intrigue. As a duo, the two have recorded and released joint works on the Male Activity label, previously ran by B.P.; as Ardor, they continue to foster a sonic garden of flowers seemingly blooming and withering over and over, with a scarce piece of everyday meditation occurring in between each cycle. The mix for Amulet of Tears includes only original works, either recorded individually by each of the two, or created together.

Paralaxe Editions is based in Barcelona, and Ylia (a.k.a. Susana Hernández) has long been one of the city's most well-regarded musicians. A classically trained pianist who came of age DJing breakbeat raves in Andalucia, she easily maneuvers between disparate scenes and styles; she's as comfortable dropping electro and techno records as she is performing alongside experimental flamenco artist Niño de Elche (she's a member of his touring band).


Following her appearances on labels such as Lapsus and Hivern Discs, Dulce Rendición is Ylia's first full-length effort, a cinematic collection of meditative and richly melodic tracks that largely grew out of her intimate live sets. Weaving together analog synths, field recordings and fragments of her own voice, much of the music was directly inspired by her dreams—and more specifically, the seemingly impossible sights and sounds that populated them. Working to recreate their lingering silhouettes in the light of day, Ylia oscillated between moments of deep introspection and playful fantasy as she settled into the hazy space between sleep and consciousness.

Dos Serpientes Blancas (Dulce Rendición)

Tester Housing was the short-lived band consisting of mates Bill Tolson and Ken Olver. The duo met during the early 1980s in the burgeoning Southside of Melbourne, St Kilda. Pitched along the bayside, St Kilda at the time was full of artists, painters, writers, poets and musicians. The suburb was the type of place where dwellers wore their hearts on their sleeves; the sort to be found sharing a jug at the pub after a fist fight. The St Kilda music scene during the late ‘70s and ‘80s was infamous, breeding bands such as the Primitive Calculators and The Boys Next Door.

Despite Tester Housing producing a modest handful of recordings, both were actively present in the St Kilda chaos. Bill established Prahran’s Greville Records in 1978 and later founded the prolific Rampant Releases in 1982, pressing the likes of Not Drowning, Waving and David Chesworth. The duo also played together in the new-wave group Gilded Youth, before joining forces and forming Tester Housing.

To commemorate Testing Housing’s imprint Left Ear Records present Over You, a 12” of the bands two 1983 singles, The Clock Ticks Over and Into You with their counterparts, a dub version and a stripped back almost acapella. Their sound channels both that of the gritty Southside and the experimental Northside scenes to create youthful and enchanting synth-pop. Both arrangements are laced with themes of love, redemption and acceptance in a unique and compelling way.

For those with an appetite for strange recesses and darker areas of music, the mixtape was built around Twin Peaks as an alternative soundtrack to that world. 

There's samples lifted from Lynch’s series and other works, with music and words from Aaliyah, Angelo Badalamenti, Benedikt Frey, The Beta Band, Cocteau Twins, Colonel Abrams, Dead Can Dance, Duran Duran, Eskimo Twins, Godley & Creme, Haruomi Hosono, Julee Cruise, Loop, Mark Bridges & Scott Morgan, M.D.M.A, Meat Beat Manifesto, My Bloody Valentine, The Timelords, Timothy Leary, Toulose Lowtrax, Turning Shrines, Visage, V/vm, William Burroughs, Zombie Zombie. 

The cassette was shopped around to various stores in LA, but due to the uncleared samples was turned down for multiple copyright infringements. Origin Peoples went ahead and distributed it anyway, with all proceeds donated to charity.

"From the start of Drinnen Traum, Nommo Hunzuu summons a momentous tension and foreboding ambience that plunges below even David Lynch and Alan Splet's Eraserhead soundtrack's depths, while he layers a conventional, sub-Scott Walker love ballad to induce a wonderfully incongruent frisson. But Hunzuu refuses to stay in one mode for very long, and soon we're buffeted into a Carpenter-esque hauntscape blended with a gritty soul song, followed by a Two Lone Swordsmen-like electro strut and a pitched-down Suicide cover.

In fact, everything on Drinnen Traum seems slowed and slurred for maximal creepiness and disorientation. Whether it's brutal, mid-tempo industrial numbers with whip-crack beats, lewd and dangerous electro-rock, or a pretty, electronic ballad, Hunzuu selects his tracks with the paramount objective of dispersing disturbing vibes. In this way, he spins a gripping narrative throughout.

When we hear Harry Dean Stanton intone, “Everything just happens. Nobody's in charge. It's one big phantasmagoria. Everything is unfolding perfectly, all pre-destined. It's all written. Just go along with the trip,” the observations translate as Drinnen Traum's mission statement. To be sure, it's a perilous trip, but also an unforgettable one that's worthy of the grizzled actor's words from the beyond.”

Inaugurating his eponymous record label elninodiablomusic, here comes el nino diablo’s maiden solo effort, ’Shadowplay’. The EP was recorded at Berlin's iconic Funkhaus studios in the winter of 2019 and features an original art cover courtesy of Danish designer Tobias Jacobsen. The music video for Shadow Dancer was directed by Adam Munnings (www.adammunnings.com).

Drawing its inspiration from the struggle and rise of the feminine, the darker minded ‘Unchained’ follows up with restrained, contradictory power. Draped in muted tones and featuring FX-drenched percussive elements directly derived from field recordings made at the Funkhaus, it folds and unfolds repeatedly; blending in the mangled suavity of distorted choirs with tape-echo’d strings and sluggish drumwork to weave an intricate tale on duality and the nature of change.
