Hessle Audio are excited to announce the release of the self-titled debut album by Pearson Sound, aka label co-head David Kennedy. Characteristically minimalist in approach, its nine tracks use a handful of elements to craft mesmerising, self-contained worlds, alive with motion and near-subliminal detail: from vast and inky landscapes, to electrifying rhythm tracks, where layers of percussion and bass tumble over one another like rocks in a landslide. Recorded between 2013-4, Pearson Sound documents a distinct phase of Kennedy's studio explorations. "I had a signal chain set up that I was really happy with, and I started sending my machines through the same processes" he says. Expanding upon the techniques underpinning his recent REM and Starburst 12"s, its tracks emerged swiftly through improvised jam sessions; some were captured in a minimum of takes, while others later took shape through extensive sculpting and post-processing. "A lot of it was made by feeding the the same sounds between two different pieces of equipment and they'd end up feeding back between each other and snowballing. On some tracks it's about harnessing that and taking it to the brink before it disintegrates, and some of them are about just letting it go full-blown out of control." The result is a record of striking contrasts: bold, stark and visceral, yet also subtle, harmonically complex and deceptively playful. While Pearson Sound's livewire percussive energy remains inextricably rooted in the club, this exploratory studio process has created Kennedy's most wide-ranging yet coherent body of work to date: a suite of thrillingly impulsive, expressive and open-ended music, untethered from restrictions of form.

Couple of nights ago I was going through my promos. For a couple of years now, a fair chunk of the techno I get sent is this droning bigroom stuff with Jeff Mills ripoff arpeggios, a big kick, and not much else. Normally some spacey / intergalactic title, cosmic imagery (black and white obviously), and despite the futuristic signifiers, doing nothing to push techno into the future. 

Now I know people have different tastes, it would be boring if they didn't. And I don't feel bitter about people jumping on 'my' bandwagon or anything like that because I was never really into this style when it first appeared. But a lot of this stuff just feels like it's techno by numbers, churned out with no love - the kinda stuff u could make in your sleep.

So I got the urge to actually make some, essentially in my sleep, and send for all the mindless techno producers out there. 

First big kickdrum I could find, first arp pattern that came into my head, get any droney metallic warehouse atmosphere and put that underneath, chuck a load of bigroom reverb over everything... it took me just over two and a half hours to finish. It's not perfect - didn't quite nail the high hats, or the sidechain, and probably a bit too dynamic and not straight enough - but u get the gist.

This isn't meant to be me showing off, and is a bit of fun really, but just have a think next time u hear this kinda stuff, how easy it is to just reproduce this style over and over (and I'm not even a 'techno' producer).

Think about where u want techno to go. For me, I want some more groove, some sound design that isn't always MASSIVE, some drum programming that is inventive and fun, different sound palettes, different tempos etc etc...

Here at Allergy Season we like to think our fates are tied to the forces of nature, whether the rain will wash away the pollen or feed a new bloom that causes us to double up on our eye drops for the day. Lady Blacktronika is nothing if not a force of nature. On countless releases over the last decade she has continually broken and rebuilt the house music wheel, crafting tracks with a completely unique perspective, and a devastating effect on the dance floor. There is a difference between reference and reverence-- Lady Blacktronika always goes heavy on the former, and never bows to the latter. 

Across "Rave Rinse Repeat" Lady Blacktronika dissects classic samples and stitches together 4 essential tools. In "Feel So Good" the cavernous sounds of rave are whittled down to just their organic elements and paired with a stomping house beat. In "Je Te Adore (Shut That Door)" a funk bass line climbs and descends the stairs endlessly, while a whispered voice coo's in our ear. Through out the EP breakbeats, tambourines, hand drums and vocals echo and filter in a psychedelic swirl. 

Allergy Season head Physical Therapy hands in big room ready remix of "Feel So Good" under his DJ Overnite alias. Putting rave samples through the meat grinder and ending up with a buzzing acid drenched techno take.
