This fall, Detroit techno icons Octave One serve up the third volume of their Locus of Control EP series. The two-track offering again explores the ‘power or powerlessness people feel over the things that shape their world,’ and never has that been more true than during the last 18 months of the pandemic.
It has almost been two years since the release of the last installment. Of course, the pandemic largely explains that delay, but that doesn’t mean the celebrated Burden Brothers haven’t stayed busy in other ways. Already in 2021, they have served up their Reworks and Whatever She Wants EPs, and have also revived their more introspective 90s alias Neveron Sunday for a new EP later in 2021. More than 25 years after first starting out, they continue to shapethe modern techno landscape with their famous analogue approach, as this new EP proves.
It opens with the superb ‘Shameless,’ a heavily percussive yet elastic track that bangs from thestart. The bassline is dark and menacing but also has a subtle sense of techno funk. Once the pixelated chords arrive, the track is doused in a cosmic energy that will take dance floors to the next level. Then comes ‘School of Seven Bells’, a straight-up seven-minute techno workout laden with rich layers of synth and a baseline full of suspense. It immediately gets you on your toes and the ever-evolving pads and loopy drums ensure maximum impact throughout.
These are two more thought-provoking, body-shaking tracks from techno’s finest.

'Opening up 2022 on Sous is an exciting new artist from Berlin, Basic Instinct, with his ‘Into The Night’ debut EP.  Part of the Vertere Berlin crew, DJ and producer Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct is something of an enigma. Hugely popular from his exciting explorations of the deeper side of techno and dark disco vibes, very little is known about him aside from his fashion brand with the club and street in mind. Collaborating with Jennifer Cardini, Andhim and most recently Hugo Boss, he is now working closely with Anja on a Schneider merchandise collection.

 Title track ‘Into The Night’ is an elegant and thoughtful meander into the mind of a deeply engaging artist, bass and beats cleverly mound into a hypnotic gelatinous haze. Warm analogue sweeps and tribal drum work keep feet firmly on the floor while vocal ad libs drift in and out and percussive layers intensify the trip. 

‘Energy’ does what it says on the tin. A rich stab-led groove leads the way as a spoken word sample declares “Energy has brought us here!” Finally, ‘Morning Groove’ lightens the mood considerably without losing any of his trademark hypnotics. Loopy and transcendental, this is the perfect showcase for an artist on the ascent, ready to take the jump to the world stage. '

Vertere Berlin is a contemporary fashion brand and party collective founded by a group of local DJs and designers. It was founded in 2017 and since then rose to international attention for their club-ready streetwear and their fashion collabos with DJs and labels like Jennifer Cardini, Disco Halal, DUAT Records to name a few.

Vertere Berlin also made a name for themselve for their hyped party series “Strictly Dancefloor Business” - hosting artists like Roza Terenzi, Narciss, DJ Fuckoff, Boris, Heap as well as their resident DJs.

As a logical next step Vertere Berlin is now launching their music label Vertere Berlin Records. 

The first release is by label founder Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct. Basic Instinct’s DJ sets represent a hypnotic and atmospheric dub-house sound. This is also reflected in this release. 

“Angel Dust” is an elegant and moody house track - enriched with a stab-led groove and a haunting vocal.

“Feel It” is dubby and sexy prime-time track. Seducing vocal cuts are joined by a warm analogue lead line.

The EP also includes two stunning remixes by VRIL and Narciss.

Bienvenue Beton! A brand-new act making his debut on Pets with two raw, straight-to- the-floor slabs of gritty technoid machine funk. Little is known about him besides the fact hes from Belgium, hes clearly a graduate of the Hardfloor school of knocks, hes invested in some serious analogue gear and he knows his way around a kick-ass groove. Grainy, full-fat 808 funk delivered with no frills or bells or unnecessary detail, Bruxelles pays homage to the citys visceral new beat and EBM roots but with contemporary muscle and a titanium jacking groove almost Wink-like hypnosis to the acid as it strips back. Voice 64 continues this theme of stark leftfield savagery with a simple pounding kick, a distorted decaying bassline and a cannon-like riff that builds on itself, encouraging the snare-rattled percussion to do the same. Its primal tendrils brought together with a laugh so demonic it could make the devil blush, once again its another physical, concentrated piece of frank, honest techno. One brand new artist, two stone cold constructions, you can bet on Beton appearing on Pets again in the near future.

BETON - Voice 64

The EBM-indebted techno funk of James Welsh’s ‘Thread’ re-emerges from the industrial fog, evolved into three outstanding remixes by a trio of rising and established artists. Radio Slave adds shuddering percussion and filter to create an edit for devastating dancefloor effect. Lobster Theremin and Workshop alumni Ozel AB reimagines the track as an ethereal rave landscape, while FC Kahuna return to deliver a playful, digital-only take that recently featured as Lauren Laverne’s ‘Headphone Highlight’ on BBC 6Music.
