"It’s a new year, babe. Everything is finally alright with the world (jk) and while suckers are making resolutions and hitting the gym, the real cool people prefer to hit… the club. Basic Instinct is definitely one of those cool people, as his track Morning Groove can attest. The breathy, sweaty ambiance of these underground parties and stellar clubs I’ve missed so much is exquisitely encapsulated in the pulsating single, an excerpt from BI’s upcoming album Into The Night. And yeah, that’s right, I said “exquisitely”. Daddy got himself a word-of-the-day calendar from x-mas and it’s already paying off. Anyways, Basic Instinct has been a pillar of Berlin’s tech house scene for a decade now, and we’re really proud to be premiering Morning Groove today. 'Opening up 2022 on Sous is an exciting new artist from Berlin, Basic Instinct, with his ‘Into The Night’ debut EP.  Part of the Vertere Berlin crew, DJ and producer Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct is something of an enigma. Hugely popular from his exciting explorations of the deeper side of techno and dark disco vibes, very little is known about him aside from his fashion brand with the club and street in mind. Collaborating with Jennifer Cardini, Andhim and most recently Hugo Boss, he is now working closely with Anja on a Schneider merchandise collection.

 Title track ‘Into The Night’ is an elegant and thoughtful meander into the mind of a deeply engaging artist, bass and beats cleverly mound into a hypnotic gelatinous haze. Warm analogue sweeps and tribal drum work keep feet firmly on the floor while vocal ad libs drift in and out and percussive layers intensify the trip. 

‘Energy’ does what it says on the tin. A rich stab-led groove leads the way as a spoken word sample declares “Energy has brought us here!” Finally, ‘Morning Groove’ lightens the mood considerably without losing any of his trademark hypnotics. Loopy and transcendental, this is the perfect showcase for an artist on the ascent, ready to take the jump to the world stage. '

Vertere Berlin is a contemporary fashion brand and party collective founded by a group of local DJs and designers. It was founded in 2017 and since then rose to international attention for their club-ready streetwear and their fashion collabos with DJs and labels like Jennifer Cardini, Disco Halal, DUAT Records to name a few.

Vertere Berlin also made a name for themselve for their hyped party series “Strictly Dancefloor Business” - hosting artists like Roza Terenzi, Narciss, DJ Fuckoff, Boris, Heap as well as their resident DJs.

As a logical next step Vertere Berlin is now launching their music label Vertere Berlin Records. 

The first release is by label founder Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct. Basic Instinct’s DJ sets represent a hypnotic and atmospheric dub-house sound. This is also reflected in this release. 

“Angel Dust” is an elegant and moody house track - enriched with a stab-led groove and a haunting vocal.

“Feel It” is dubby and sexy prime-time track. Seducing vocal cuts are joined by a warm analogue lead line.

The EP also includes two stunning remixes by VRIL and Narciss.

Born and raised in the heart of the French Alps, and now residing in Paris, DJ Physical’s sound is one of a harsh romance. Perhaps it was the beauty and serenity of the snow-covered mountain tops and the ferocious nature of French techno moulding together that spawned his ‘Raw Poetry’ aesthetic; an emotive blend of dark and light that feels like it could belong in concert halls and theatres as well as underground sex clubs.

Following an outing on Lobster Theremin’s recent various artist fundraiser for Ukraine, and appearances on Rinse France and Running Out Of Steam, the Parisian local serves up five deadly cuts of brooding electro and techno.

‘Not So Human’ delivers the influence of trance on the contemporary techno soundscape, but doesn’t over-do it. Trance-licked, not dominated, the uncompromising cut of wave-driven techno is the perfect accompaniment for when you want to take things up a notch. ‘Sex Club’ maintains DJ Physicals’ fascination with ‘Raw Poetry’ - brimming with breaks-driven breakdowns, spine-tingling atmospherics and low-pressure basslines that highlight the variety of influence the emerging producer brings to the table.

Acid synth-lines and lively trance-inspo create an altogether lighter mood as we flip the record on ‘Mortal Dance’, before ‘Easy Dancer’ changes its tune altogether with a pounding cut of progressive, freaky electronica.

Closing the release is ‘Go Further’ - misty electro, Southern-trap samples and those distinctive, high-culture ambient interludes creating a sense of emotive mystery. A well-rounded release with plenty of left-turns, this is DJ Physical’s ‘Raw Poetry’ at its finest.

Following outings on Rinse FM and HOR, German producer Rove Ranger takes aim on the next release of Lobster Theremin’s full-blooded techno assault; 4 very different cuts of pulsating, bass-driven techno that have one eye in the rear view mirror and the other firmly fixated ahead.

‘CS80’ is an aquatic, rhythmic experience; bubbling with blues, greens and pinks in a techno climate so often associated with grey. A beautiful blend of the new and old school. Tough, but with a touch of soul. ‘Millennial Millenium’ is a blissful trip through neighbouring underworlds and spirit hollows, unrelenting kicks and ghostly atmospherics crafting a cut of psychedelic graveyard techno.

‘La Manana’ is more of a heads-down affair. Punchy bass accompanies the kicks on a track that instantly captivates; less concerned with emotion and more with increasing heart rates; it's a tripped-out, bouncy experience that screams fun. The EP is rounded off with ‘Horse On Acid’. Have you ever seen a horse on acid? We have, and this is exactly what it sounded like.
