Diana Krall's extraordinary new album, 'Glad Rag Doll' (10/02, Verve Records) is an exhilarating and adventurous exploration of new sounds, new instrumentation and new musicians. It stars a singer and piano player, filled with mischief, humour and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy.

The record reveals itself at that remarkable vanishing point in time where all music; swinging, rocking and taboo, collide with songs of longing, solace and regret. All are made new again in a vaudeville of Krall's own imagining.

It is at once a major departure and a natural progression for the gifted musician. Diana simply calls the album, "a song and dance record".

"We all just went in there as if the songs were written yesterday. I didn't want to make a period piece or nostalgia record," said Krall.

In fact, these are songs that Krall has spent a lifetime contemplating. Both her childhood home and her current address are stacked with 78rpm records and song folios filled with precious and unpolished gems, songs that have not worn out their lustre from repetition.

If any of these songs could be identified as "20's or 30's music", then they are 20's or 30's songs as imagined for the 21st Century.

The same could be said for a startling rendition of the Doc Pomus classic, "Lonely Avenue", first cut in the 1950s.

The contemplative, contemporary reading of the old Gene Austin recording of "Let It Rain" finds a sympathetic echo in Krall's exquisite rendition of Buddy and Julie Miller's more recent ballad of spiritual longing, "Wide River To Cross".

Working for the first time with renowned producer T Bone Burnett and engineer Mike Piersante, Krall revels in a fresh sonic playground captured in the vivid grain and deep resonant focus of analog tape. Burnett has assembled a distinguished cast of remarkable men to complement Krall's piano contribution at an 1890s Steinway upright.

From the hushed to the howling, Marc Ribot's poised and sympathetic solo guitar accompaniment on the title track contrasts beautifully with a range of surprising sounds and colors.

As ever with a Diana Krall record, her distinctive feel and unique sense of time is crucial. She has established a new and exciting rhythmic rapport with drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch that has let loose some of her most joyous piano playing heard on record to date.

Among the new elements brought into the spontaneous arrangement process are the mysterious, sometimes comedic commentaries coming from the keyboards of Keefus Green.

Diana Krall has collaborated with Academy Award winning costume designer, Colleen Atwood and acclaimed photographer, Mark Seliger to create a series of beautiful and striking images for Krall's new album, "Glad Rag Doll". They are inspired by Alfred Cheney Johnston's pictures of the girls of the Ziegfeld Follies taken during the 1920s.

Carla Bruni’s fourth album, Little French Songs, will be released on April 16th 2013 via Verve Records. The first single from the album, “Chez Keith et Anita,” will be released digitally in the US on February 26th.  PRESS HERE to stream the song now. Bruni’s touch is immediately apparent in these new compositions that once again focus on raw emotions and love.
 
Little French Songs was recorded by Bénédicte Schmitt at Labomatic Studios in Paris and it features eight original compositions by Carla Bruni. Album track, “Priere” was co-written by Carla and longtime friend and collaborator Julien Clerc.“Dolce Francia” is an Italian adaptation of Charles Trenet’s “Douce France” and “Valse Posthume” is written by Chopin, with lyrics written by Carla Bruni.  
 
Carla Bruni has been writing and performing music since 1997. In the late 1990s, Bruni changed direction when she decided to launch a music career, first as a songwriter for Julien Clerc, for whom she wrote several songs for his album Si j’étais elle (If I Were Her), then as a singer-songwriter-for her first album, Quelqu’un m’a dit (Someone Told Me), released in 2002. Composed with the help of Louis Bertignac, who also produced the album, Quelqu’un m’a dit was an instant hit. Acclaimed by critics, the album sold two million copies. In 2003, Bruni won the Prix Raoul Breton, awarded by SACEM (French association of songwriters and composers) to recognize and encourage an up-and-coming songwriter or composer. She was awarded the Victoire de la Musique for Best Female Artist the same year. In  January 2007, Bruni released her second album, No Promises, which set English poems to music. Among the poets she selected were Yeats, Auden, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, Walter de la Mare and Dorothy Parker. This second work, which sold more than 400,000 copies worldwide, shot to the top of the charts in both France and Europe. Her third album was released 2008 and was entitled Comme si de rien n’était (As If Nothing Happened), the title of a photographic work by her brother Virginio Bruni Tedeschi that appears in the album’s booklet.

We thought we knew Lou Doillon, but there was more to her. As she says in all simplicity, “I had every reason in the world not to go into music.” So throughout her career as a young actress and international model, the daughter of Jacques Doillon and Jane Birkin was holding back a part of herself: the singer.
ICU, her first single released in the spring, was a revelation. Its haunting vocals, compelling melody and twilight ambience held the immediate promise of a bright future. The impression was confirmed by her first EP, released just before the summer.
 
Lou had secretly been playing guitar and writing songs in English - her “private language” - for years. Without the presence of Étienne Daho, an insatiable music-lover and fond tutor, she would probably never have made the leap into the unknown. So the release of her first album, Places, has come as a relief for Lou Doillon and marks the start of her new career. Its title is a double reference: to the place she can now take on the musical chessboard, and to her personal journey.
 
“Before, Lou was between two worlds - fashion and movies. With this album, I think she’s finally found her world,” elegantly observes Zdar, the man with the silver hands (Phoenix, The Rapture, Beastie Boys, Cat Power, etc.) who mixed the record in his Paris studio. “There was a kind of lunar conjunction between Étienne Daho and Lou Doillon,” he adds, summing up the amazing, improbable album. As we listen, we are reminded of great artists past and present: Karen Dalton, Joni Mitchell, Feist and others. “Lou seems more of a soul than a rock singer to me”, says Daho, whose production and dazzling arrangements on Places are his finest yet.
 
After ICU, the opening track, Devil Or Angel is a ballad sung by a woman freed at last, summoning up Velvets-loaded memories. The song is an immediate classic, no less. In the space of just two tracks, Lou Doillon imposes her unique voice and timbre, and that is just the start. Describing days of melancholy passing at the pace of a drum roll, One Day After Another is reminiscent of Patti Smith’s narrative art, while Make A Sound’s pop immediacy holds a reference to its writer’s “leaded wings”. Much like Cat Power, Lou Doillon is equally at home with an acoustic range (the iridescent clearing in the middle of the album: Same Old Game) and brass-backed soul (Jealousy and Questions And Answers - two visas for Memphis). These livelier tunes also heighten the depth of her startlingly flexible voice. To conclude, two songs - Places, the album’s title track, and Real Smart - open up whole new perspectives. The record reaches its climax as Lou Doillon’s sonorous voice provides the perfect foil for the trembling majesty of a children’s choir.
 
The strongly autobiographical lyrics reveal years of transience, a troubled personality (“They’re laments that are mainly to do with survival”) and a rebellious nature (Defiant, as one title stresses). “I cope with my great weakness as a woman, and to do so, I insist on a masculine approach. In fact, the whole album is dedicated to men”. Tracks such as Same Old Game have a cathartic value for the singer, who is fascinated by the writing of Leonard Cohen and Lhasa’s work.

YUNA explains, “‘Sixth Street’ is probably a new chapter for me.  All of the songs were written in my apartment where I’m most comfortable, and at that point I understood who I was and knew what I was feeling about life.”
 

To celebrate the release of the EP, YUNA has teamed up with virtual venue platform Stageit, who will host the EP release show.  By choosing an online partner to live-stream the performance, it allows all of her fans, regardless of where they’re located worldwide, to attend the event.  A ticket for the show is $10 and can be purchased here.  Tickets will give fans access to the live feed, where YUNA will be performing songs from the EP and other favorites.
