Slang Teacher is the club music oriented project of Julian Lautenbacher who is currently based between Kyiv and Berlin. Interested in the intersection of Sound & Picture, he is moving between the fields of film,  photography, sound design and music in his work. Within this project his sound is heavily inspired by the 90s and a blend of different electronic music styles influenced by that era. 

His current focus is the exploration and deconstruction of conventional social structures, intimacy and the construct of human interaction in different cultures. Topics such as the unspoken, queerness, peculiar social codes and anti-discrimination are central.

VSLK: Your first DJ gig
ST: That must have been in 2016. We were running a party series in Berlin back then with the focus on yet unknown off locations for dance music events. I remember that we had this very pure vision about community, trying to create something new in the scene with more care and love for detail.

VSLK: Outside of the DJ scene, what type of art or creativity interests you the most?
ST: I think as I studied sound & music in a university, I am looking at these fields in a very broad way without any limitations of style and genre. In my perception there’s no reason to draw lines or boarders between different forms of the arts. They all flow and stimulate each other and I also like to think about creativity and the arts that way. I am definitely very fascinated by the intersection of Sound & Picture though and I am always trying to find these moments of symbiosis.

VSLK: Best city you’ve ever been to:
ST: Well, In my opinion every city has something else to offer really. I guess it always depends on what we are looking for in a certain moment. However, Kyiv is definitely up there for me for many reasons.

VSLK: Snow or Rain?
ST: Definitely Snow. It’s really quite rare that Berlin stays white or that we get a lot of snow here. I love that Kyiv is different in that sense and that the city becomes quite beautiful during the winter.

VSLK: Some personal goals for the next 12 months?
ST: Besides different music related releases which are planned for this year, I am also working on a documentary film since now over 2,5 years which I hope to be able to finish within the next 12 months.

Riga born / Barcelona based Ksenia Kamikaza is a prominent figure in Latvian scene. The founder of UNDER festival and Platz für Tanz label, Ksenia is one of the main moving forces of rave culture in Latvia. You cannot imagine local showcases of Gegen, Voxnox or Boiler Room without her boundless sets. Spinning records in places like fabric.London, Dommune in Tokyo, Sziget in Budapest or Kit Kat in Berlin, losing herself in music and dust at Burning Man, Ksenia varies from techno to ambient, from dark disco to IDM. She puts listeners on a rhythm and sound journey you cannot leave once you have stepped in.

VSLK: Your first DJ gig?
Ksenia: In March 2004. I had started the Intelligent Beats radio show the year before and my friends invited me to play in the chill-out room at their party. I was so nervous that I pressed the play button of the first track, but later I messed up the players and stopped the track. Omg, I will remember it forever and I even remember the track, it was Bonobo - Something for Windy.

VSLK: Your longest DJ set?
Ksenia: 9 hours in Brussels. It was supposed to be 3 hours, but people just didn't leave. I tried to put slower tracks and they started to dance in pairs, so I decided to go on. I got sick the day before, so I was taking Nurofen and drinking shots of vodka and playing and playing. Next day I was totally fine, no temperature at all. In 2 years a guy came to me at a festival in Batumi and said: Heeey, I remember you from Brussels, that was an amazing party! Was totally unexpected, nice surprise. It was a good party indeed, and sweet memories.

VSLK: What is important to you on the road, especially from gig to gig?
Ksenia: Healthy food, which is almost impossible. I literally hate airport food, same sandwiches all over the world. Though there are exceptions, Rome airport has excellent food and choice of drinks. I also loved Kyiv's Boryspil, even had my favorite restaurant and the coffee place there.

VSLK: Rock or Pop?
Ksenia: Pop, because Rock is dead (sorry guys).

VSLK: Any movie or series recommendations?
Ksenia: One of my favorite movies is Our Music directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 2004. He is one of the greatest directors indeed. In this movie he speaks about the war, what it brings to the world. 20 years have passed, but it feels like he would film it about our days. The true masterpiece, not really known to the wide audience. Not to finish on a sad note, I would like to mention another movie: Kebab Connection by Anno Saul. It is a hilarious comedy about love and how it conquers stupid prejudices and traditions.

Multifaceted DJ Miro Von Berlin emerged from Berlin nightlife, driven by cathartic dance floor experiences and desire to create space where the curious ones can wander. Preferred not to be genre-defined or categorized, Miro is elegantly gliding between dance-inducing grooves and cosmic soundscapes, keeping the surprise factor not just for the audience but also for oneself. Whatever the setting may be, one is in for a magical journey when Miro is behind the decks, serving electronic mutations from beyond. 

As a co-creator of party series GRAVE in Croatia, Miro has been meticulously curating line-ups since 2019, inviting established and emerging techno artists, hence supporting the florescence of the local scene.


VSLK: Your first DJ gig?
Miro: I organized a party called ZAGRAVE (meanwhile GRAVE) in my hometown Zagreb, at the end of 2019, together with my friend Dora. It was my first time playing in a club environment and in front of people, just a few months after I started practicing, so I was extremely stressed. Technically speaking, there were a few slips, however that didn’t disturb the flow of the party and the crowd was dancing and cheering all along, giving me energy and this feeling of togetherness.

VSLK: Are you satisfied with the Berlin techno scene? Would you change anything?
Miro: I think it’s great that it is much more diverse than just a few years back, and that it’s not about one particular sound that most are trying to fit into. I do feel that the scene got diluted and I would love for the strong sense of community and this wild energy that I felt before to re-emerge.

VSLK: What inspires you most?
Miro: People surrounding me - my friends, chosen family, beautiful beings I meet on the dance floor and around. With their presence, awareness, stories, looks, movements, expressions, frequencies…

VSLK: Why Berlin?
Miro: The reason why I’m in Berlin 10 years now is because there is such a high concentration of creative souls here, that inspire me on so many different levels. And the feeling of freedom that allows me to be the most authentic version of myself.

VSLK: Any personal goals for the near future?
Miro: I’ve been working on my production for quite some time, and the goal is to start sharing it with the world this year. I feel like once I overcome this first breakthrough of releasing something of my own, I will open myself up as a channel transmitting cosmic frequencies.

Prymara is co-founder of most heavy clubs and projects in the rave subculture music scene of China, such as: Aby'ss club (Shanghai), Pillbox club (Beijing), HDR Cult, Hydra and C.U.M. (Common Underground Members). Born and raised in Ukraine he moved a long time ago to the East part of the world to become mastermind behind underground music scene of China and a music player that spread the fast and distorted vibrations around all Chinese underground clubs and Asia and continuously cultivating Ukrainian rave scene inside the local market inviting the most talented artists from the Ukraine, as: Tweeman, Nastya Muravyova, Vani Vachi, Nastia, Re:Drum, same time supporting numerous international artists during their tours at East.


𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What about your first DJ gig?
𝙋𝙍𝙔𝙈𝘼𝙍𝘼: What was your first DJ gig? Prymara: It was a long way to my first gig. Nobody dragged me into the industry, so its take a time of practicing at open decks around the Shanghai and playing at bars, and for real I am glad that I had this way to build my style and get understanding path of the Dj until the father of underground scene in China Max Shen invite me to play at 44KW club. At that time, it was one of the best underground clubs in China and a player in the world music scene. In short, it was inspiring, hot and ravey as it can be, which gave me a push deep inside to become a part of the underground scene in China and the world.


𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: You've been living in Shanghai for many years now. What's the most incredible thing you love about the city? 
𝙋𝙍𝙔𝙈𝘼𝙍𝘼: Right now it's already 8 years since I've been living in Shanghai. Every city has its pros and cons, because there is no perfect place in this world, but for sure as a western person such a city is shocking with about 25 million people, a combination of old European buildings with glass skyscrapers and Buddhist and Dao temples, food, culture looks like on another planet. For sure this place is unique and I am happy to be part of the energy of Shanghai and put my word to the development of culture in it. 

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Is there a musical instrument you play or want to play? 
𝙋𝙍𝙔𝙈𝘼𝙍𝘼: Like most of bedroom producers, I can and enjoy playing on synths. In my childhood I played on bandura, but in the era of digitalization I think the most creative way of creation and performance of the music is of course using the DAW's. I think it's a significant step for humankind when we start to use electronic devices to complement classic instruments and understand better waves and vibrations of sound. Now we can better understand from the sound of the creation of the universe to the noize of grasshoppers.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Movie night or a long series session? 
𝙋𝙍𝙔𝙈𝘼𝙍𝘼: Hmmm... depends, but as a cinematographic lover I will go with movie night. I think it's more challenging for directors to fully open the storytale and make it eye-catching with a time limit than trying to make it as long as possible for run a lot of episodes or seasons. And you know challenges push us to creativity.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What is “Hug Life”? 
𝙋𝙍𝙔𝙈𝘼𝙍𝘼: Solving way of any trouble with ancient method that is in our DNA which is action of the contact body to body.

Skungal is a talented DJ and music producer from Ukraine, known for her energetic sets full of groovy sounds. She specializes in Techno, Acid, Breaks, hard house, hard groove, and hard techno. Skungal has performed in various clubs and events across Ukraine, Poland, Spain, and Berlin, including popular clubs such as AEDEN, Re:mise, Ranate, Fitzroy, Suicide Club, Undertage Club, Recede Club, AVA, Mahalla and RSO. Her music is a perfect blend of different genres and an expression of her passion and dedication to music.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Your first DJ gig:
𝙎𝙆𝙐𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙇: My first gig was in my hometown in Odesa and one of my friends who's been working in a ramen cafe, where we've been hanging around really often with a lot of people who's been doing some creative stuff, neither it's art, djing, photography etc. It was just been our spot. He asked to play there, we did some announce that I'm gonna play and that was it, I played a DJ set and a really good amount of people came just to see me, say hi, listen to music, eat, drink, connect with each other. It was pretty cool, I'll remember that day for a long time.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What skills would you like to learn in the near future?
𝙎𝙆𝙐𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙇: I would love to learn to play vinyl, cause I’m started growing my collection of records and I want everybody to listen to them and enjoy them as I do.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any movie or series recommendations?
𝙎𝙆𝙐𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙇: Currently, I’m watching Shameless, old, but gold.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Adventure vacation or relaxation?
𝙎𝙆𝙐𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙇: Can’t tell you the future, but I gonna go to a lot of Music Festivals this summer for sure, season is just starting.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Some personal goals for the next 12 months?
𝙎𝙆𝙐𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙇: Release more tracks which right now only in a demo version.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Can you remember your first DJ gig?
𝙈𝙄𝙐𝙍𝘼: Yeah, it was like yesterday, my friend and I collected all our favorite songs from Depeche Mode, Madonna, Donna Summer etc. It was like the best house party, we just played our favorite tracks for friends :)

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any crazy DJ stories?
𝙈𝙄𝙐𝙍𝘼: I don't really have crazy stories, I just have some cute stories of people falling in love during my sets and then writing me messages that this or that song from my set is now their song for a couple.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What do you do to stay positive?
𝙈𝙄𝙐𝙍𝘼: I just want to say without any guile that I am a very positive person, to be like that I sleep a lot and dance at home as if no one is watching, and I always try to take close friends with me to my sets, always. It's good to share impressions and experiences with loved ones, it makes me happy.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Beach season or conquering mountains?
𝙈𝙄𝙐𝙍𝘼: Beach seasons , sunset times… mmmm

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What do you personally want to achieve?
𝙈𝙄𝙐𝙍𝘼: I want to give people a good experience and make them happy. I always dream of bringing smiles and happiness with my music. Soon I will release my first EP which will focus on new and positive energy.
