In this moment of wisdom found in Proverbs 18:2  “A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions”. As Greg has been sharing today about Vision and how important it is and how most people walk around in a haze, in a fog that if they were asked where are they going they’d either say “to work” or “to the house” or “to dinner” or “to Church” etc.  They can’t tell you where they are going with their life, but there are the ones who don’t care about where they are going or even hearing someone explain to them about a situation or direction.  They are also the same ones whose life are falling apart, their relationships are in constant flux, their ministry is in constant struggle, they have some consistent lingering issues in their life that are obvious to all those around them.  Yet when you ask them if they’d like to sit down and talk, if they have a hint it’s about “the issue” or “the problem” they’ll avoid that meeting and eventually you if you are persistent in seeking a meeting; like the plague. All the while they talk continually of the consequences of these unresolved issues in their life.  If that wasn’t bad enough they speak seemingly with boldness and openness about others and have no qualms about pointing out other’s issues.

They continue speaking of the Lord’s discipline and some of the many ways His discipline comes and how it means the Lord is for us, loves us and has a plan for us; to train us.  We have to guard our hearts so we do not end up resenting the Lord discipline because we don’t have a clear understanding of His heart towards us. In this wisdom moment found in Proverbs 22:7,  Greg shares that one of the big worldwide protests today called Occupy Wall Street, it speaks, in a fragmented, unorganized way, for what it claims is the “99%”, who allegedly say that they are being ruled over by the 1%, the ones that have the wealth.  They are allegedly saying that this can be resolved by taking from the 1% and giving it to the 99%.  The 1%, the wealthy, are saying get wealth for yourself if you’d like to rule, but don’t take our wealth so you can rule.  God says, the rich rule over the poor.  What does this mean to us, the individual?  It means if we’d like to be among the leaders, that we need to do our business well, manage our finances as God instructs us and He will place us in places of leadership.

 

All the while the 99% are protesting more and more about how the 1%, the wealthy, rule over the 99%, they continue to borrow money they can’t repay, followed by being shocked that they are getting more and more bound to the leadership of the 1%.  GOD SAYS, “The borrower is servant of the lender”

We can protest, we can march in the streets, we can shout from the roof tops how unjust we feel we’re being treated, but if we keep borrowing more and more money we’ll be bound more and more to the ones we borrow it from including governments!
God’s Words never changes.  If we change, believe and operate under God’s Word, and His Wisdom, then and only then can we expect to be free.

Have you thought about listening to God? It is easy to get advice from other people and even many get advice and wisdom from the internet. It is important that we look to God first and listen to what He is saying.

This wisdom moment explains how to have a peaceful life. The Bible tells us how to live peacefully. “But whoever listens to Me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” Proverbs 1:33 ESV. When you think about listening to the Lord it will put you in a place a safety, we can look at the definition of safety. Safety is defined as the state of being safe; freedom from the occurrence or risk of injury, danger, or loss. The quality of averting or not causing injury, danger, or loss. A contrivance or device to prevent injury or avert danger.

Next the word ease is defined as freedom from labor, pain, or physical annoyance; tranquil rest; comfort: freedom from concern, anxiety, or solicitude; a quiet state of mind: freedom from difficulty or great effort; facility.  This is what we can have when we abide, spend time with God, which is why we talk about it all the time! You can get your free abiding plan today. Lastly, when we listen to God we can live without fear of harm! Harm is defined as physical injury or mental damage; hurt: moral injury; evil; wrong. Many people are scared to follow God because they have a fear of not being safe and not having an easy life and being afraid of harm coming to them. But this scripture says the opposite will happen! “But whoever listens to Me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” Proverbs 1:33 ESV.  Wisdom is knowledge properly applied and God is wisdom! In the first Proverb in the Bible it speaks of ill-gotten gain. There is wisdom in asking questions when you are pursuing a business deal because you don’t want to blindly jump into one. You don’t want to take advantage of people, so you need to ask yourself questions like is it legal? Are we taking advantage of people? Are we asking for exorbitant prices that’s unfair? When we finish this business transaction will the customer be worse off or blessed? But if someone is out for ill-gotten gain none of these matter to them!

“My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;  let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;  we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;  cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.” Proverbs 1:10-19

God is not pleased with someone oppressing people, so they can benefit from something. He will not bless someone focused on ill-gotten gain. How business is done matters! You must be up front with everything and let your customer know what is going on and trust God with the results.

Greg gives an example of ill-gotten gain as the Florida Lottery. The money that is earned from it is used for education but the people who buy lottery tickets are usually the ones who are living paycheck to paycheck and have a couple of dollars left. They will buy a lottery ticket to get hope that maybe they will win. We know that a small number of people actually win on lottery tickets. Preying on people who could spend their money on more important things is not the way it has to be. There are other ways to get the money that is needed for education.

You must seek God and He will guide you! Getting things in the wrong way is not the way to live because that is a life without God. When you think about love we can look at how it is defined in 1 Corinthians. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Only doing works without love is just noise to God! Love is vital in our life.

When you look at faithfulness and wonder if you are faithful you can check to see if you have loopholes in your circumstances and relationships. If someone has loopholes, then they keep a way out, so they don’t have to stay faithful. Faithfulness requires suffrage and it requires you to do without sometimes, but this pleases the Lord!

For love and faithfulness to be written on the tablets of your heart you must spend time with God, abide with Him. What you meditate on is what is written on your heart! How can you expect to find favor with God and man if you are not faithful with God where you are at? In this wisdom moment, we share the importance of having a fear of the Lord as you acquire knowledge.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

If you have not yet been given the gift of the fear of the Lord, then you can ask God for it! A prayer that we pray at the VFN Prayer and Fasting Community is: Father release the spirit of the fear of God into mine and all Your Church’s hearts. Release the lightning and thunder from Your Throne to strike our hearts. Release Your presence and holy dread that makes us tremble before You. Unite our hearts to Your heart and Word and cause us to delight in the fear of God.

Also, if we don’t spend time with God, there is no reverential fear of Him! When you look at the Proverbs above you can see that those who do not have a fear of God, have no wisdom because the starting point is the fear of God!

Greg gives an example of how a child can have a healthy fear of their parents. When your parents have told you to do something, and you know to get it done before they get home from work, in a healthy relationship, you will get the task done because you know there are consequences for not obeying them.

There is no fear of anything in our culture today. When you look back several decades, most people had a fear of God even if they didn’t have a relationship with Him! Now even people that claim to know God have no fear of Him. To have a healthy fear of God then you first must be aware of Him. You can’t only have a fear of Him once a week on Sunday or only when you are in trouble, you must always have it and be aware of His presence and that He is always there.

Secondly, because you fear the Lord, you are a disciple of Jesus. This is understanding the teachings of Jesus and applying it to your life. If you desire to become a disciple of Jesus, you can start today on Emmaus Road and begin your discipleship journey.

Next, you must be aware there are consequences for sin. When you walk in a fear of God, it leads you to make good choices because you know the consequences of not following Him and not obeying Him is death, eternity without Him. God’s mercy is so amazing how even when someone is living in sin, He allows them to live, so they have the chance to make Him the Lord of their life and to spend eternity with Him!

Also, we must have a knowledge and understanding of God and learn things about Him daily. A person of wisdom soaks in the knowledge of God and gains understanding. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Many are worried about writing the wrong plan, but no matter how you want it to turn out God’s plan is the plan that will make it in the end. We can sit down and write out our plans. When we are living as a believer, God will guide our steps into our plan and if the plan turns out to be wrong, then we will know because God will lead us in a different direction.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. The Lord works out everything to its proper end—even the wicked for a day of disaster.” Proverbs 16:3-4

We can look at the example of Jesus and His life on the earth. It looked like His life was coming to a terrible end but as we know God had a plan and three days after Jesus’ death He rose again! And now we are saved through His death! God is doing the same work in our life. We may not see the end but know that when we commit our lives to the Lord things will turn out for good.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

In this wisdom moment, we talk about how God is in control!

“He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” Proverbs 2:7-8

Living a good upright life is okay! It will not be in vain, and He will never forget all that we have done for Him. This is a victorious life because as we walk as an upright person, we will have success. God’s people are always outnumbered so that God can show Himself mighty! If we don’t understand that God is the One Who holds victory in His hands, then we will wear ourselves out.

Then God is a shield for the blameless! How can we be blameless? We can look at the life of David and how he always loved God, he spent time with Him and sought to walk in obedience to God and sought to lead others to do the same. Yes, he was a sinner, but he cried out to God and God restored him to be blameless before Him. In every battle and every trial, David cried out to God and gave credit to God for every victory. When we live how David did, we can lead a blameless live too and have God as our shield.

Next, God is guarding our course in life. We can walk in faith knowing that God is doing this! As a believer, we can say we are just because Jesus made us right before God.

“But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.” Romans 3:21-26

In this wisdom moment, we uncover what the path of a believer is.

“Stern discipline awaits anyone who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die.” Proverbs 15:10

What path is the scripture referring to? “Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus’ teachings are the path that believers are to walk on! The Word of God lets us know where we are on the path and where we are in life. It will light up our path so that we know where we are walking.

When we become believers, we must start on the path of discipleship to learn how to stay on this path and to stay rightly related to Jesus. When the Lord leads us, it is a straight path; it is not complicated.

“Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.” Proverbs 4:10-12

America’s Church has left the path of discipleship, and the Proverbs say the Church will have stern discipline. The Church must turn back to the path and be discipled and learn the ways of Jesus! Discipline is to help to change a person’s ways and discipline from God should lead us to draw closer to Him. Even Jesus had to learn obedience through His sufferings!

“Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 5:8-10

When we go through sufferings in life, we become a source for others to come to Christ. Stay on the path! If you have not been discipled, get discipled today! In this wisdom moment, we share the importance of humility.

“Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” Proverbs 18:12

It is important for us to take a prerequisite before a man falls. We can look at what took place to make them fall and know what we can prevent in our own lives or the lives of others to stop us from falling.

It is also important for us to have someone in our lives who can point out to us when we are walking in pride because pride is blinding. Pride is defined as an inordinate opinion and an intense self-awareness of yourself. It is when we begin to take our own counsel above God’s or over other people. Walking in pride will always lead to a downfall. It is important to realize that we need God in everything we do because we do not know everything.

How do we humble ourselves? Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Humility is defined as a total dependency on God and a love for other people. When we throw ourselves into the things of God and trust God with our lives, then honor comes.

In this wisdom moment, we discuss how through the truth of God’s Word we can get wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:1-6

We are finding out that if we want wisdom and knowledge for our everyday lives, we can follow this Proverbs! We must first accept God’s Word and secondly, we need to store up God’s Word in us, which would be soaking in His Word. Many do this by memorizing scripture. Next, we must turn our ear to God which would be having a relationship with Him. At this point, we would apply our heart to this understanding and call out for insight and understanding! We must open our mouths and ask God for this and God will answer.

Also, our eyes will have to get involved in this process, we look for understanding and search for it like treasure. We start recognizing what leads us closer to the Lord and what will draw us away. God responds to our hunger for Him and will fill us up as we seek Him. Will you seek Him? When you do, He will give you everything you need!

In this wisdom moment, we share that when you have no vision, there is no harvest!

“Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing.” Proverbs 20:4

A farmer will have a vision for what he is planting. He will see what the outcome will be before he has even planted the seed! He must prepare for the harvest that will come. Many people want good things in their life, like for God to move in their life, or to get their dream job, but they only want it. They don’t have a vision for their desires.

There will be no harvest without first plowing the fields and preparing for the vision to come to pass. Plowing the soil is messy and doesn’t always look the best, but it must be done with the vision/harvest in mind! There is a process to the harvest coming, and it takes much faith and patience. Also, you must keep your vision before you as you wait for the harvest!

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:17

If we just expect a harvest but don’t prepare for it, we will not have it! We must move in action according to the vision, and in that, we can expect a harvest. What do you think about this wisdom moment?
