24-year old producer, VHOOR, is one of Brazil’s brightest talents to take the international stage. Hailing from the city of Belo Horizonte, VHOOR has been able to build a loyal fanbase both in Brazil and overseas, mixing global electronic music with Brazilian and Afro-Latino rhythms..

VHOOR’s work with American producer Sango, for their 2019 EP “Acima” helped introduce VHOOR’s talents to a global audience, while the two worked together for Sango’s more recent projects, including his album “Da Rocinha 4” and his EP “Sangozinho.” VHOOR’s music is frequently played on Soulection Radio (Apple Music 1), KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), BBC1Xtra, BBC Radio6, WWFM, NTS, Bandcamp Weekly and others. In Brazil, VHOOR is one of today’s go-to producers, working with some of Brazil’s brightest talents in the Hip Hop, Electronic, and Baile Funk realm. His latest album “BAILE” with Brazilian rapper FBC, helped modernize Miami Bass and Freestyle production and was widely featured on various Best Albums of 2021 lists. The album was applauded by Brazilian media and the single “Se Ta Solteira” went viral on TikTok and Instagram Reels, resulting in over 26 million plays on Spotify, while charting on several national and global charts on Spotify.

VHOOR continues to push the boundaries of electronic music production, importing international genres and incorporating them with Brazilian Baile Funk and other lesser known Brazilian rhythms. His solo instrumental albums (Ritmo, Baile & Vibes, Baile & Sauce, etc), and his work as part of the collective Weird Baile (alongside producers Mu540 and JLZ), have expanded the conversation on the potential of Brazilian electronic music.

The Samba de Coconut is a Brazilian dance. The coconut appears in the northeast region as a work dance and a spread through the states of Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Alagoas and Pernambuco. The rhythm has indigenous features, with distinct African influence of quilombos and senzalas. The negroes sang during the ritual of breaking the coconut for the extraction of the coconuts. The existing sertanejo aspect, possibly, is remnant of the Portuguese matrix.

Miami bass (booty music or booty bass) is a subgenre of hip hop music that became popular music of South Florida in the 1980s and 1990s. Its roots are directly linked to the electro-funk sound of the early 1980s.

The use of the Roland TR-808 sustained kick drum, raised dance tempos, and frequently sexually explicit lyrical content differentiate it from other hip hop subgenres. Music author Richie Unterberger has characterized Miami bass as using rhythms with a "stop start flavor" and "hissy" cymbals with lyrics that "reflected the language of the streets, particularly Miami's historically black neighborhoods such as Liberty City and Overtown".[1]

Despite early national media attention in the 1980s Miami bass has never found consistent mainstream acceptance, though its importance has had a profound impact on the development of hip hop, dance music, and pop.[2]

VHOOR’s latest album “Ritmo” pays homage to the northeastern Brazilian rhythm Samba de Coco, a variation of the broader northeastern dance/rhythm Coco. With deep cultural references and traditions, Samba de Coco has a unique shuffle beat accompanied by a traditional dance using specific garments amongst all participants. Samba de Coco also carries deep Afro-Brazilian roots, based in Brazil’s quilombo (quilombolas) communities in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. Quilombola communities are settlements founded by escaped slaves and remain powerful symbols of Afro-Brazilian identity, culture and resistance. VHOOR has taken this often overlooked cultural phenomenon and has melded it into his own style of production, updating the sounds, while maintaining its roots.
