One Night With My Gu*st! W/ Vibes4YourSoul

The legendary 1988 movie "Le Grand Bleu" ("The Big blue") by Luc Besson depicting the life of French freediver Jacques Mayol features my favorite original soundtrack, written by Eric Serra. 
I remember buying the CD as a kid after seeing the film, and have been regularly listening to it ever since. 

Among the many dreamy cinematic gems written by Serra for the movie, my favorite moment is "Virgin Islands", a short track starting with a dark minimalist mood lightened up by a splendid lush guitar riff, and evolving gradually into an exhilarating strings-led anthem. 
I've always wanted to remix it to give it a groovy balearic twist in a DJ-friendly format. So here is my take of it.

I strongly recommend a full dive (!) into the whole extended soundtrack :)

Here's a little tribute to Quincy Jones and LA, as part of "Too Slow To Disco" label new compilation whose proceeds will go to MUSICARES, an organization helping musicians affected by the recent Southern California wildfires. 

In this remix I revisited Quincy's classic 1981 song "The Dude", featuring a dream team of musicians like James Ingram on vocals, Herbie Hancock and Steve Wonder on some keys and...a young Michael among the choir.

"An American Prayer" is a tribute record made in 1978 by the Doors to their late hero & leader Jim Morrison. 
Rather overlooked, this album is nevertheless full of great cuts. Ray Manzarek was once again at his best, designing great keyboards grooves perfectly matching some obscure (but fascinating)Jim Morrison's spoken words & poems.
I have been working on various edits or remixes from this LP these last few weeks. Here is a housy take revisiting the short latin-spiced jam "Latino Chrome".

The Doors - Latino Chrome (V4YS Rework)

We all need heroes right? Among mine, American director & scriptwriter David Simon holds a pretty good ranking. We owe him some of the best thought-provoking, humanist & politically-conscious drama series of the modern TV era. Starting with the best of all (an unquestionable fact validated by...myself:), The Wire (2002/2008, HBO). 
Resonating all the more with me, music plays an integer part in David's work. That's obvious in his remarkable heartfelt appeal to post-Katrina New Orleans ("Treme", 2010/2013, HBO), but is also a common thread in all his productions.
His latest gem, "Show Me A Hero" (2015, HBO), is no exception to the rule. This mini-series evokes a true story from the late 70's/early 80's, depicting the struggles of a young Mayor in a NYC suburban town, to deal with social & racial cohesion in a stressed budgetary situation. 
Unsurpringly somehow, considering the "deep America" social themes at play here, Bruce Springsteen was a great fit to fill a spot in the show's soundtrack. His beautiful melancholic ballad, "Secret Garden", is omnipresent in each of the the miniseries 4 episodes. Here is a deep, balearic/slo-mo style rework I made of it.

Bruce Springsteen -  Secret Garden (V4YS "Show Me A Hero" Rework)

Originally recorded in 1973, "Where Are We Going" was supposed to be part of the legendary "Let's Get It On" album. 
For some reason it did not make the cut, and this beautiful song written by Larry Mizell was first heard through a jazz/funk cover by Donald Byrd & his Blackbyrds. 

It's only in 2001 that the original Marvin Gaye version was released as part of "Let's Get It On" LP reissue featuring various b-sides & studio sessions.

Ever since I first heard it a few years ago, it has immediately become one of my favorite Marvin's song, because of its irresistible groove, Marvin's singing at his best, but also its thoughtful lyrics.

Marvin Gaye - Where Are We Going (V4YS Rework)

Released in 1975, the "Young Americans" album was recorded in the US, where David Bowie was living at the time under the heavy influence of philly soul and early disco sounds. On this record David surrounded himself with musicians from these scenes, most notably Puerto-Rican Guitarist Carlos Alomar, as well as Luther Vandross, who features on various side vocals. 

If "Fame" is, well, the most...famous track of the LP (and David first true hit with the US audience), the song "Young Americans" is extremely groovy as well, with its anthem-like chorus hard to resist.

Young Americans (V4YS All Night Edit)

Jamaican saxophonist & arranger Cedric Im Brooks is one of my most cherished reggae artist. Actually, confining him to the reggae scene would be a massive understatement. 
A brilliant musician, he kept on blurring the lines between spiritual Free-jazz (think Sun Ra), Afro grooves (think Fela), Latin rhythms and, of course, Reggae. 
A cornerstone of legendary label Studio One, his musical legacy is impressive and if you're not familiar with him, I urge you to dig into his most famous albums, mostly recorded in the 70's with his band The Light Of Saba ("United Africa", "Im Flash Forward" or "The Magical Light Of Saba") & get ready for some colourful funky journey.

"Africa" is one of my favorite track by him, an afro-funk jam whose joyful & infectious horns chorus is hard to resist. With a clear hint at the "back to Motherland" Rasta myth, "Africa" is also a great example of Cedric's spiritual Rastafari faith, often present in his songs lyrics.

Cedric Im Brooks - Africa (V4YS Motherland Edit)

One of the many recordings of Chaka Khan with Chicago band Rufus, "Live In Me" is part of their 1979 album "Masterjam", produced by Quincy Jones. 

Warm and groovy, this song is also a bit "cheesy" to me by moments, so here is a nudisco rework, where I kept the grooviest parts while adding some punchier beats & bassline.

Rufus & Chaka Khan - Live In Me (V4YS Rework)

Released in 1983 alongside the album "Voyou", "Les Princes des Villes" has always been one of my favorite track by French musician &amp; producer Michel Berger.

Here is a DJ-friendly revisit, where I tried to retain the track's inherent groove, while beefing up the beats, tentatively adding a sweet electro' touch &amp; lightening up the sung parts. 
Let's keep having "des idées bizarres":)

Les Princes Des Villes (V4YS Bizarre Rework)

Released in 1983 as part of the "Dádiva" album, "Rio Babilônia" is not as famous as the "Taj Mahal / Filho Maravilha / Pais Tropical" song, which was the highlight of this LP. 
It is nevertheless a joyful love message written byJorge Ben to his incredible hometown. Here is my drummed up edit of it.

Jorge Ben - Rio Babilônia (V4YS Flamengo Edit)

No need to describe this classic 1985 mellow song from Bryan Ferry. There are a few cool edits of it out there, but I wanted something a bit more slo-mo/balearic-like, so here is my take of it.

Bryan Ferry - Slave To Love (V4YS Can't Escape Edit)

"Cool Cat", released in 1982 as part of Queen's 10th album, "Hot Space" is a groovy slo-mo gem, quite unusual in the band rock/pop discography. 

David Bowie, who had recorded the hit "Under Pressure" with the band for this same album, was also supposed to appear on this song, as a backing singer. But he was not happy with his vocals, and asked the band not to use his recordings at the last minute.

Here is my Dj-friendly "dreamy tropical" edit of it.

Released in 1970 as part of Toquinho's eponym LP, "Na Água Negra Da Lagoa" is a joyful song typical of the vibrant late 60's/early 70s MPB scene.

Vibes4YourSoul - Acaraje(Hot Digits)

Written in 1969 in Roma by Chico Buarque and Toquinho, “Samba de Orly,” is a beautiful exile song. A melancholic message addressed by a Brazilian forced to flee to Europe, to a friend lucky enough to go back home to Rio. 
It's in fact an auto-biographic story in a heavy political context: in early 1969, under aggressive scrutiny by an increasingly repressive Brazilian dictatorship, Chico Buarque took advantage of a concert tour in Italy with Toquinho to effectively exile himself there temporarily with his wife. 
When Toquinho and Chico reviewed the final version of the song, their friend Vinicius De Moraes advised them to make the lyrics harsher and more clearly political to reflect the pain of life in exile. But Brazilian censorship refused the changes, and the song was released in Brazil with their original milder lyrics. Song title refers to Paris's Orly, as it was well known to the Brazilian audience, contrary to Roma's Fiumicino airport.

Fast forward to today, and I can't help thinking about Brazil current situation and regime, which evokes in several ways this dark dictatorship era. Let's hope all the wonderful artists in the country will not be forced to exile themselves as well. Here's my groovy take of the song, as a little hint of love and support to all of them :)
