Stan Ellison's tune to Richard Pomfret's dialect poetry, by way of some translation by Stan Ellison and Mike Harding. By the time my  Nan was a child the mills would decamp for the entire Wakes Week from Burnley to Blackpool. Burnley Fair in the second week of July is a vestige of this tradition.

Tommy the Pedlar

From the Anne Geddes Gilchrist collection. Collected from a Mrs Bowker in July 1909 at Sunderland Point. Gilchrist notes the dialect usage of “while” for “until” in the last line. There are numerous echoes of other songs, including “Died for Love”. I've used the tune to “Are You Going to Leave Me”, because of the similarities and because it seems to fit.

This one is based on a true story of a skirmish between smugglers and revenue men that took place two hundred and odd years ago. It’s called “For the Better Discovering and Bringing to Justice”, because this was the stated purpose of the arrest warrants issued for twenty-one local men. It features a number of field recordings from the site of the battle. Thanks to Harrison Perks at HP Music for recording and mixing the vocals.
