Old Brown Dog

‘A Jug of This’ (Roud 1191). This version is based on that published in Barrett, English Folk-Songs (1891) p.73, from an unnamed source singer in Melksham, Wiltshire. It is related to other songs that include ‘Ye Mar’ners All’ and ‘A Jug of Punch’ (Roud 1808).

A Jug of This

‘The Broomfield Hill’. (Roud 34, Child 43). This performance is based loosely on the version given by George Turvey of Foulden, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, to Vaughan Williams and published in the Journal of the Folk Song Society, 1911, p.114. The text has been collated in my mind from different versions.

Broomfield Hill

Vic Gammon is a performer of English traditional music (mainly on the voice, anglo concertina, and melodeon) and a writer, researcher and member of the Editorial Board of the Folk Music Journal. He has composed music for a number of stage and radio plays. He has performed in various groups including The Etchingham Steam Band with Shirley Collins in the 1970s and currently with Dearman, Gammon and Harrison whose CD Black Crow/White Crow was issued by the EFDSS. Vic recently retired from being Senior Lecturer in Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, but remains a guest member of staff. A book of Vic’s essays entitled Desire, Drink and Death in English Folk and Vernacular and Song, was published by Ashgate in 2008.
