Dan The Automator - Wiling [Ft. Neph The Madman]

This is when two of my favourite creative musical forces come together and make something beautiful. 

First off, I love the instrumental version of this track and I originally heard Yasiin rhyme over it a couple years back. I was always hopeful that a studio version - or a live performance - would surface. 

The original mix that was released with this performance was not my favourite. It's low in volume, overly bass heavy and lacked clarity. I did my best to balance out the frequencies and bring out the guitar that was buried in the mix. 

Hopefully you find this version to be an improvement. This track deserves it!

This is taken from Khruangbin’s set (in Barcelona, Spain) at Primavera 2022, originally released on the Primavera Sound YouTube channel. I don't own the rights to this music or the recording. Not looking to make any money off this track. I'm just improving - according to my own ears and sonic sensibility -  a mix for myself and for others to enjoy. And in the process, showcasing my skill-set at audio processing, restoration and mixing.

In November 2015, the Minneapolis duo Bones & Beeker—consisting of singer-songwriter Anthony Newes and producer/multi-instrumentalist BK-One—quietly released a self-titled gem of a debut. Hip-hop producer BK-One (aka Brendan Kelly) had previously spent years on the road as the touring DJ for Rhymesayers MC Brother Ali. So after releasing his own album, BK-One reached out to Ali and other friends to help craft a hip-hop EP out of source material from the Bones & Beeker record.

First onboard was DJ extraordinaire Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5), who is about to drop his own album, Die Cut, and is currently supporting it on a North American tour. On the “World Behind” remix, Cut Chemist channels turntable elders Double Dee & Steinski and offers a funky retake with massive, moving drums.

Minneapolis neighbor and Rhymesayers affiliated rapper P.O.S. steps up to drop a verse on the funky favorite “Each Time I Die.” P.O.S., a Doomtree Collective member, has just dropped his own album, Chill, Dummy, out now on Doomtree.

Minneapolis Afro-futurist collective ZULUZULUU—one of BK-One’s favorite bands—could be considered kindred spirits with Bones & Beeker, as both groups ditch convention and move to the beat of their own drums. ZULUZULUU takes on “Wind-Up Dolls” and starts from scratch, recording their own blissed-out take.

Acclaimed Rhymesayers rapper Brother Ali sprinkles the sauce on the fan-favorite track “Heartbroken in Love”—the original song was recently licensed for the Netflix series Easy.

Coming off his critically acclaimed album, 2017’s Brick Body Kids Still Daydream (Mello Music), Open Mike Eagle blesses the BK-One re-edit of “A Song for Al’s Dead Mother.” A Chicago native and friend of the Doomtree Collective, Open Mike Eagle now resides in Los Angeles as a member of Project Blowed.

Superblack has got the beats. Famed De La Soul producer Prince Paul, rapper/drummer J-Zone, and ego trip cofounder (and man-of-many-talents) Sacha Jenkins joined forces to mess around with music. They remix the B&B single “Lupine,” focusing on the raw drums that ground and move forward the art and culture that is hip-hop.

Backwoodz Studioz is proud to announce the upcoming release of Henry Canyons' first full-length LP exclusively under the Backwoodz umbrella. The Cool Side is entirely produced by Henry’s longtime collaborator, Bones, with guest features from billy woods and Homeboy Sandman. It’s a project that finds Henry putting his effortless flows to the test over Bones’ rangy production, flipping new styles with every changeup and beat switch.

“Cool Side didn’t start as an album,” Henry explains, “Bones and I started making random joints that were almost all jazz/funk samples; I’d send him sample ideas and he would send me back a beat the next day”. It was a fun thing that they talked about making into an EP, but was briefly shelved when Henry accepted an artists’ residency in Biarritz, France in the fall of 2016. 

After the residency was completed, Henry returned to the project with new perspective. “I was still in France, and in a different place mentally, physically and emotionally. Also Bones’ production had taken a darker, more pensive turn.  What came out were reactions to being abroad and isolated during a time of upheaval at home”

Bones admits that he stepped outside his own comfort zone in order to full realize Henry’s vision. “Most of my own production has more of a pop orientation. Generally, I'm into layers and harmonies and catchy hooks. But with Henry I actively tried to stray away from that,” he remembers .  

This duality frames The Cool Side both artistically, and in it’s presentation. Side A and Side B reflects not just the sides of the vinyl, but the tensions between past and present, between the ideal and the real.  While you may recognize Henry from his stellar features on albums by Backwoodz fixtures billy woods (Today, I Wrote Nothing)  and Willie Green (Doc Savage), The Cool Side of the Pillow finds Henry Canyons in a milieux all his own.

Brazilian Beats 'n' Pieces is an essential introduction / review of the Mr Bongo Brazilian catalogue turntablised and cut-up in a mixtape format by Kev Luckhurst (formerly Phat Kev).

Kev has selected, mixed, scratched and juggled his way through 30 of his favourite tracks from the previous Brazilian Beats compilations. In addition to the main 50 minute mix the release also includes a bonus remix and a bonus re-edit from Kev. Brazilian Beats 'n' Pieces mixed by Kev Luckhurst

"Stop and Look," the first single off Adrian Younge Presents the Delfonics, dropped back in December and pretty much blew our minds. William's voice was so pure and Adrian's symphonic production was so lush. So, we are super pleased to give you guys the remix of that amazing track, which features production by Detroit MC Black Milk and rhymes by Cali hip-hop legends Souls of Mischief. Look out for the album on March 12.

Closed Sessions: ATX is the sophomore release from the Closed Sessions label.  The album was recorded over 4 days spent inside of a landmark mansion in Austin, Texas. During 24-hour recording sessions, emcees and producers from all parts of the country, and all sub-genres of Hip Hop came through to create one underground classic LP and documentary. Recorded in March of 2010, Closed Sessions: ATX features artists such as  Fashawn, Freddie Gibbs, DJ Babu, Rakaa Iriscience, CurT@!N$, Million $ Mano, Rhymefest, Emilio Rojas, Buff1, 6th Sense, and many others.
