The fan was no match, for the summer heat
The house was clean, supper on the stove
Baby crawling, on linoleum floors
Swattin’ at the flies sneakin’ in the screen door

She heard the train rollin’ by, on tracks 
   near the road
From her backyard, you can hear the creek flow
Company houses, laid out in a line
The only local work was in a hand-loading mine

She said, we got to get out, get out of Virginia
She said I’m leavin’ today, with or without ya
This old holler ain't nothin' like home
She could feel it, down in her bones
We got to get out, get out of Virginia 

With the little bit he made, they were
   barely getting by
She had enough she shook her fist at the sky

When her man got home, he had nothin' to say
She’d packed up the bed clothes, and gave them away
Down in the creek, there was household debris
Broken old dishes on the ground by the trees

With pin curls, lipstick and a tear-stained face
She said, by God I’m gettin' out of this place
