In this, the fifth installment of The Red Button Series, Vic Spencer drops Physical Buff. Just one week after his 32nd birthday when he cleverly heckled his own hecklers Vic comes with this eerie bass laced piano track, a Stanley Clarke loop from The Show Soundtrack. Physical Buff is the score of his peers nightmares when Vic enters the booth. With lines like "Just call me Vic Spencer the death adder", he continues to kill the rap game softly. Letting listeners know he does this "Without a crew, with the flu". If you don't know by now Vic is a man all his own with a passion that will not be deterred you might need to listen harder with feverish frequency. As long as he continues to drop quality music like Physical Buff, Vic Spencer is not going away, sorry to dash any high hopes. 

Continuing to show his age if you will, saying that he is from the era of Saucony's, Jodeci boots and overalls and the leader of the new school. If you know nothing of your hip hop past that is probably one of the reasons you would be confused by Vic Spencer. He is a rapper not fond of fraudulence in any way be it in his life or his rhymes, happily letting fans and peers alike know exactly where he comes from. 

Vic takes his time on this smooth track which makes his message hit even harder, every word clear is as ice so there is no mistaking exactly what he is putting down. Whether you agree that he is indeed the best rapper or not, Vic Spencer will not be denied in the rap game; he won't let you deny him in the rap game. As the track fades out you hear "Rappers just be straight up talkin"...Which is what Vic himself would tell you if you asked him face to face. Physical Buff may be short, but how long does an honest straight to the point record really need to be? Vic Spencer eloquently says more in 2:23 than most rappers do in 4:30, its understandable why cats hate him. He's a real emcee who is just too cold for average rappers to like. Enjoy Physical Buff, repeatedly, until you gain a full understanding of what Vic Spencer is really saying.

Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. From Hell’s Roof to the Rhine Valley, Rochester, NY emcee Eto (formerly known as Lil’ Eto) and German-Spanish producer Superior have joined forces! The resulting full-length collaboration, “Long Story Short” is set to drop via Below System Records (Digital & CD) on April 12th (with vinyl coming courtesy of Tuff Kong Records).

As evidenced by first single “Fortune” and accompanying video, Eto’s penchant for balancing the pain of the street and the progression of the hustle is a perfect foil for Superior’s cinematic and somber beat-scapes.

Speaking on the collaboration, Superior said “My previous releases were rooted in my love of boom-bap. However, when I linked up with Eto, I started producing specifically with him in mind and keeping it more atmospheric in keeping with the coldness of his environment and narratives.” With a gripping chemistry throughout the only guest spots on the project is from Skyzoo and Toronto rhyme-counterpart, Daniel Son.

Of course Eto has been releasing audio masterpieces at a dizzying rate in the past several months. These include his new full-length collaboration with DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill) entitled “Hell’s Roof” (which is a nickname for his hometown which has one of the highest crime rates in the country) and recent surprise EP, “Heather Grey” with long-time production collaborator VDon (Dark Lo, Conway The Machine) and emcee Willie The Kid. Eto also was featured on one of the most celebrated albums for 2018 Westside Gunn’s, “Hitler Wears Hermes 6” (“John Bena” produced by DJ Muggs) As a producer, Eto also recently laced tracks for Benny The Butcher, 38 Spesh and Jamal Gasol.

Constantly adapting his work as a producer, Superior's catalogue for Below System Records includes his 2017 production album, “The Journey”, which included appearances from Blu, Edo. G, Reks, Termanology and Lil Fame among others.

His full-length album with Chicago emcee, Verbal Kent, “Half My Life” was released in 2018 and had appearances from Vic Spencer, Sonnyjim and Recognize Ali.

Over the past 20 years, Vic Spencer has become one of the most respected figures in underground hip-hop culture as a whole. The Chicago MC keeps his name in the hip-hop headlines with a constant stream of albums, he definitely has dropped 4 to 5 albums a year for the past 5 years and loose tracks whose titles often effectively sum up the snarky, acutely self-aware attitude of his lyrics. Though his reputation has grown thanks in part to his collaborations with the late Sean Price (RuckDown), Flee Lord (LORDMOBB), 38 Spesh (TRUST), and acclaimed "soultrap" rapper/producer Tree, Spencer is a proud free agent with his own label (Old Fart Luggage) who vocally dismisses the noise surrounding his city’s hip-hop landscape and stays committed to—even obsessed with—forging his own path. Vic Spencer is best known for his work with Big Ghost (The Ghost of Living) and his solo album, The Cost of Victory which dropped in 2015 and was rank 19 out of 40 in the Rolling Stone’s top 40 albums of that year. Vic is also working with August Fanon on a continuing series entitled Psychological Cheat Sheet and has a 4 part series with SONNYJIM called Spencer for Higher. Question: What is the result when you mix the wit of Sean Price, the comedic delivery of DOOM, the unorthodox approach of the late ODB, the lungs of B-Real, and the life experience of a group home resident hailing from the streets of Chicago’s gritty East Side?
