“Dongeng Marsinah” diakui Sapardi Djoko Damono sebagai salah satu sajak yang proses pembuatannya paling lama dalam sejarah kepenyairannya. “Dongeng Marsinah” ditulis selama tiga tahun. Waktu yang terbilang sangat lama bila dibandingkan dengan dua sajak legendaris “Hujan Bulan Juni” dan “Aku Ingin” yang masing-masing ditulis Sapardi Djoko Damono hanya dalam waktu sekurang-kurangnya 15 menit saja. Proses penulisan yang teramat lama ini diakuinya terjadi lantaran terhambat oleh amarah. Setiap kali Sapardi akan menuliskan Sajak Dongeng Marsinah, ia terus menerus diliputi perasaan marah sehingga ia kerap menghentikan proses kreatifnya. Bagi Sapardi, orang yang sedang marah seharusnya tidak usah menulis sajak. Lebih baik orang yang marah itu demo saja.

Proses penulisan yang berlangsung selama tiga tahun rasanya terbayarkan dengan setiap susunan kata yang pas, dalam artian, tidak ada satu kata pun dalam puisi ini yang sia-sia, seluruhnya mampu menghantarkan pembaca untuk memasuki kedalaman dunia khayalan Sapardi.
