Victor Pacini understands the delicate nature of abuse. Not only is he a survivor of sexual abuse, but his sister was murdered in 2001 in a domestic violence tragedy. 

His dynamic Erin's Law curriculum has been delivered to over 950,000 children and parents. 
His program has been referred by school administrators as, “The most unique and effective program on sexual abuse awareness for students.” 

Victor is the author of Winning Within, There’s Only One You, Be Seen and Heard (Erin’s Law Content), Your VOICE, My Dreams, and has recorded two music CD’s. Sexual abuse disclosures do not match the instances of abuse. Many children wait years, sometimes until adulthood, before finding the strength to speak the unspeakable. Maybe they were threatened. Maybe they never understood what happened to them WAS abuse and that it was NEVER their fault. Maybe…just maybe…they were unsure of how their loved ones would respond.

Preventing sexual abuse can feel like an overwhelming and never-ending battle. Talk about personal body safety as early and as often as possible. Use anatomically correct words as parents. Keep an open dialogue about relationships, feelings, and seemingly everyday and mundane life experiences. Listen, listen, listen. Maintain vigilance over who spends time with our children and how they interact with them. Listing it out like this CAN make it seem impossible.

Trauma symptoms are all relative to our experiences in life. What may seem disastrous and harmful to me may just seem like an every day occurrence to another. There is no comparing horrors; “the worst of the worst” is subjective in our own happenings. No matter your past, no matter what others deem as “worthy trauma” we all face the arduous path of coping.

When we don’t understand the power imbalance of an abusive relationship, it’s easy to judge a victim of domestic violence. Why victims stay is not simple to explain nor is every abusive relationship the same. However, we can look at common abuser tactics and why so many victims feel trapped and unable to leave. First of all, abusers do not start off as abusive. Abusers can be incredibly charismatic, kind, and even gentle in the honeymoon phase. They know that in order to gain the trust, love, and loyalty we so often want out of HEALTHY relationships, they must play the part; They manipulate their partner into believing they are a good person.

On March 12th 2020, teachers, parents, and caregivers had to find a new normal: How to balance E-learning and life. Childhood Victories experienced the first impact  COVID-19 the same day. One of our presenters was finishing up a live presentation with a Q and A session. The P.A. system erupted in the middle answering of a question:

“Students are to bring their iPads, laptops, chargers, and school books home. All after school events have been cancelled. Teachers, there will be a mandatory meeting immediately following the students dismissal today.”

I have struggled with last-minute changes, cancelled plans, and spontaneity. Like a lot of millennials, I grew up watching everything Pixar. Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles were watched countless times. My siblings and myself would huddle together in our living room and escape through the cartoons. We watched them so often we could say the lines in sync with the characters. We knew when to yell “that’s you!” at each other when an ugly or particularly evil character came on screen. We bonded through our trauma, sure. I had no idea crisis centers existed. I knew of hotlines but my naive mind thought those were only for current child abuse victims; Not adult survivors of sexual abuse. I wish I had known then, what I know now:

My life revolves around 3 things: My family, my work, and my dorky artsy-fartsy crafting hobbies. Like most people, I was devastated when we went into lockdown back in March. I'm the kind of person who likes to stay busy; Being stuck at home was incredibly overwhelming the first two weeks. I had to find a way to cope with not working every day, the urge to binge-eat, and keeping my 3-year-old occupied. Here are the ways I went about turning a negative into a positive.
