I wrote this song while my wife and I lived in the country 11 miles west of Prince Albert with renter Dave Grier, an employee of SaskPower and a new believer. We met him through Mickey Patrick who was also employed by SaskPower.

This was at a time when we were young and freshly excited about having received the Spirit of God more than a year and a half earlier. The Lord was leading us through Charismatic and Pentecostal circles, teaching and revealing to us His Person and Will as confirmed in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments.

I recall Dave was excited about the song when I first played it to him. He said it sounded like a cross between Johnny Cash and someone else I can’t remember.

One of the greatest battles I’ve ever had has been to forsake family, more particularly my parents and most particularly, my father. His draw on my heart was so powerful. In his last years, his state was so pitiable that it was very hard for me to refuse him any wishes. It was agonizing indeed. 

One evening while in prayer I received a vision of the Lord. He was standing up to put a stop to the enemies who were tormenting me. Mom called the next morning to tell me Dad died. He was buried days later on my birthday, April 1, 1985. 

We didn’t attend Dad’s funeral. In his death, I felt loosened, with new freedom and power.

A Deadly Pull

Since the beginning of man, he has wanted to fly. Many of us have had sleep dreams of flying by faith, powered by believing we can be airborne. 

And so it is! We can fly, or at least are meant to do so, in a way physical flying can’t compare. God gives us that power in our relationship with Him whereby our spirits soar.

While this song was written in 1984, it didn’t begin to be fulfilled until after the Great Fast our community had in 2014. Many people were taken away and the music production got going in earnest after Paul Cohen left in September 2017.

Flying

“What a wonderful reality when a workingman is finally done his day. I didn’t earn it; don’t deserve it; He just freely, freely gave - what can I say?”

Seven years after I entered the victory and resulting state of the rest of God in its formative stages, I was given to write this song – six verses without a chorus. I was joyfully experiencing a new dimension that was crystallizing from the year 2000. At this time, I called it A New Song. 

Then, 12 years later, perhaps to the day in the same month of March 2019, I was given to professionally record the song. At this stage, I realized that the 5th verse captured that spiritual dimension in its advanced state and should be used as a chorus line. Hence, the song was slightly rearranged, and the name of the song was changed.

Now, finally, I DO sing from the mountaintop and declare to you that the place is surely real. Many millions have heard of this “Celestial City” since the beginning of time. At worst, men have not believed that this place of “nirvana,” or “enlightenment” existed; many have faintly hoped and believed it did, but few have discovered or attained to it. One day all will be brought to believe and not only believe but enter. This is that place heard of by many as the “Kingdom of Heaven.” There are not many ways but only One Way. 

I do declare to you there is that place. Other of my songs, There Is a Place, The Flutterby, and Take Two also announce its existence. These songs serve notice of what it takes to get there. When one arrives, like the caterpillar emerging from a cocoon to become a flutterby, they discover they have become their destination in the sky.

Week 32 - I Can’t Believe It’s Not (200802)

In December of 2010, there came a call to lay down the life for another. There was no one else to do it, and it didn’t matter; the duty and appointment were ours alone. 

It appeared this person’s life was on the line. He was suspected and accused of, condemned, and hunted for alleged horrific crimes in his country Guatemala many years ago. In my contemplation of these matters, realizing we could lose everything, a tune came to me in the middle of the night of January 30/31, 2011, followed by these words. 

I happened to have a recorder by my bedside at the time, which I never had available for any other song in my life. I had forgotten this tune over the years but was able to retrieve it on the recorder in May 2016.
