Mookie Betts, the brand new single by London alt-indie band Victory Kicks. Recorded at home in the spring of 2020, the song is about being in a band during lockdown and about an imagined and distant moment when being together becomes possible again, and how that might feel. Mookie Betts is the lead single from the band’s seventh album Free the Night which was recorded at home during the Coronavirus pandemic and will be released in 2021. It features ten new songs about life, love and loss during lockdown, as well as the redemptive power of Baseball.

No Sound is the third single to be released from the forthcoming Victory Kicks album 'Free the Night', out later this year on UAV Records. It was written and recorded in early 2020 during lockdown in the UK.

Human Rain Delay is an EP consisting of reworked versions of songs recorded at various points over the last ten years or so that never found their way onto a record. If that makes them sound like sweepings from the cutting room floor then, well, there's probably some truth in that. But having gone back to them I think they're worth putting out into the world anyway. Hopefully you'll agree. On Repeat has been sat on my phone as a rough demo for years. I'm fond of it, but it never seemed to quite fit with previous collections of tunes. The Final Hit is a tune originally intended for the album Out Beyond the Radar that I never got around to finishing until now. One Twenty Four is new and was originally going to be on a new album called Free the Night which will definitely be coming out this year (I've been saying that now for three years, but this time I really mean it). Human Rain Delay is a song I recorded 10 years ago and if you dig around in the Victory Kicks back catalogue on Bandcamp you can still find that version. This one isn't much different, but it does have a backing vocal cameo from my sister - thanks Harriet. And for anyone wondering, Human Rain Delay is one of the many phrases from baseball glossary that I'll probably end up stealing for a song title. It was coined for former Cleveland Guardian's first baseman Mike Hargrove, each of whose plate appearances took roughly the length of time it will take you to listen to these four songs.

The Final Hit

Free the Night is the seventh full-length album from Victory Kicks. Initially recorded over a series of late-night sessions during the height of the pandemic, it was reworked in the year or so that followed. It's ten songs are about love, loss and baseball set against the backdrop of the early 2020s.

Victory Kicks is the recording project of London based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer John Sibley. A veteran of several London based indie bands, by day, John works at a university. The rest of his time is spent writing songs and making records at home. These consist of a driving, melodic, jangly and atmospheric brand of indie rock, drawing inspiration from bands such as Spoon, The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Wilco, The National, Death Cab for Cutie, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Guided by Voices, and The Walkmen. 

John has been doing this pretty much constantly since he started releasing music under the name Victory Kicks in 2013. This began as a way of continuing to make music when life and work got busy. Early EPs and albums of catchy lo-fi indie rock gained favourable critical attention and radio play in both the UK and the US, and Victory Kicks became known for releasing an almost continuous stream of home recorded indie rock, barely pausing between releases. 

Having begun as a solo project, recording and releasing records out of John’s flat in South London, over the years Victory Kicks has come to sit somewhere between a solo project and a band with regular contributions from a rotating cast of friends, former bandmates, and members of other London based acts. To date, this has resulted in six full-length albums and six EPs.
