Most big brands already understand that something like half of all people are consuming their content and watching their shows on their computers, smart phones, and tablets.  As a small business owner, you can skip the expense of putting your commercial on regular TV and target just those people interested in the types of products and services you provide using YouTube in-stream advertising.  

FYI - you know those $100 adwords coupons Google sends out to businesses? (or you get when you sign up for a website at a place like GoDaddy or Bluehost)  You can use them for YouTube also.  And it's easy to set up ....

You Can Be On TV!

Online video is an extremely effective way to increase online visibility and position yourself as an expert.  And the thing that keeps most people from getting started, is not knowing what to make videos about.  

Here's what to do. Take out a piece of paper and answer the following questions.  Just brainstorm, don't filter or edit - that's later:
1. What's the stupidest question you've ever been asked?
2. What's the most common question? What else ... typically there are a bunch?  Try to come up with at least 5.
3. What do you hate talking about that you wish you could just direct people to a video instead?
4. Lastly, what are some of the questions you WISH people would ask you?  What questions SHOULD people be asking if they knew better?

After creating your general list, it's time for keyword research - the process of finding out what topics are actually being searched for on Google, and the best way to word the topics to get the most search engine traffic for your business videos. Have you ever watched a video where it's really hard to hear what the people are saying?  Don't do that!  You'll lose people!  The built-in microphone on ANY video camera will sound bad. You can also use a a shotgun style mic that goes on a stand and points at your mouth - but those can get expensive.  The lapel mic is only like $30 and it sounds great.    

Keep in mind, many consumer grade cameras don't have a mic input.  In that case, record your audio separately and plug the mic into an mp3 audio record (I use SONY IC mp3 recorder).  So you'll hit record on both the video camera and the audio recorder at the same time - then sync them up in editing.   And here's a little trick for that.  

You know how in the movies that use a clapboard to start off each scene?  They do that to help them sync up the audio and video.  The clap sound makes a very distinct spike in the audio file and helps the editor line things up.  So, instead of buying a clapboard, you can simulate that by clapping your hands three times in front of the camera right after hitting record.

Video Marketing aficionado Mike Liebensohn talks about one of the essentials to making great videos - great lighting. 

Good lighting can help a cheap camera or even your phone camera look like pro work.  It also makes you look good, giving you a "twinkle" in your eye.  Once you realize what it looks like with the catch light in the eyes you'll never want to not have it (watch the video to see what I'm talking about!)

Here's an inexpensive soft-box 3 piece lighting kit that I use

It comes with fluorescent bulbs (which I recommend) but make sure if you ever get replacement bulbs, or if you plan to create your own lighting somehow, get bulbs rated around 5400K or 5500K.  This is the "color" of the light.  If you just go buy the ones at home depot or walmart they'll probably be a really low K number and look yellowy.  It will skew the natural colors of the subject.

FYI - in the video, toward the beginning, I showed two shots from "a $150 flip cam".  Because I had things setup for my main camera, the lighting wasn't ideal for the flip cam in this first shot.  Properly set up light WOULD make the flip cam look really good.  Compare that to the 2nd shot from the flip cam with no additional lights (just the regular room lights) it definitely looks like a webcam or something very amateur.  (That was a kodak playtouch by the way)
