Three miles north of the white house, is a cottage called the soldiers’ home. Where we found our refuge from the scorching sun, three summers in a row. This retirement home for disabled soldiers sits atop a hill,
And talking to them about their lives, made us feel fulfilled.

The Cook - For one hundred fifty hungry mouths, I cook nonstop in the dining hall.
The Nurses – Ev’ry day we work in the infirmary, tending to the wounded and fallen.
The Guards – We escort the family’s carriage, or chase after him unaccompanied on horseback. The Soldiers – he’d dine among us, and catch us all up, on what’s going on in the war.

Mary, Tad & Robert – It has helped us all alleviate the grief, from the recent death of Willie. Tad – I love to sit with the guards while they eat, and go about their drills.
Mary – When I talk to soldiers, it dulls my pain and their words bring comfort to me.
Mary, Tad & Robert – We get to spend more time together and start moving on as a family

Lincoln – Though I wasn’t sure at first, I’m glad that Mary asked to move here.
Every night, riding back to the cottage, I get to distance myself, from the fear.
It’s true, I’m worried ‘bout the state of the union, and I’ve exhausted almost every option.
But behind closed doors, I’ve been writing a solution, that should help win back, all our losses.
