A Tribute to my Friend Hari

Vijay Venkat is a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist, multi-genre performer and composer based in the United Kingdom. Considered by many as one of the best instrumentalists in the world on each instrument he plays, Vijay performs music from several musical genres with great ease. Because of his versatility of multiple musical styles, he is a favourite with many collaborating musicians from various musical styles of the world. His specialism is in Indian Classical (Carnatic - South Indian) and Jazz-Fusion. Although Vijay could play many instruments, he considers violin, flute, vichitra veena and viola as his main instruments and he is also a fine singer. He is a versatile composer in multiple genres of music and a teacher of high standing. Vijay is strictly against mutilating great Classical compositions both Indian and Western in the name of fusion and believes in preserving traditional compositions, performing them in the traditional format. He is against disregarding the composers and believes in respecting the great composers of the past. Although highly capable of composing original intricate compositions in the South Indian Classical idiom, Vijay feels that no musician should venture into that area as it has been blessed and sanctified by great Saint composers 'The Trinity' who have shown us the beauty of each raga, new ragas and the essence of music. Vijay feels 'Anything new will always be a shadow/copy of the great composers and is not required in Carnatic repertoire as a lifetime isn't enough to comprehend the greatness of the timeless compositions of the saints. Intellectualising the compositions is a foolish exercise and only serves in satisfying one's own ego.'  Vijay composes his own music for fusion performances, Jazz and Jazz-fusion.
