The Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic  productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. 


Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard, dancefloor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick 
production science.
Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dancefloor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effectswhich makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the 
bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.
Next up, Anarchist appropriates the tropes of nineties hip-hop-influenced jump-up to give the sound a modernist renaissance. Rather than using a rap sample, Rhymestar is enlisted to provide the lyrical punch. His bars roll out over the half-time intro, and then peppered throughout as vocoded motifs to confirm that old skool vibe. There’s nothing old skool about the production levels, though, as the icicle-sharp drums and honey-and-lemon bassline drive the rave 
onwards.
You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample 
signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.
If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dancefloor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible.

There might only be a few releases under the Kronology
moniker, but the experience of the producers
formerly known as Slogun and iOh has shone through
nonetheless. Now, the LA-based duo are regular fixtures
on the set-lists of some of the biggest DJs in the scene.
Take Friction on Radio 1, for example. He’s supported
them since they first hit Technique and recently
premiered this very release. If you heard that (and if you didn’t, you’d better have a good
excuse) you’ll already know they’ve shoved the bar up another couple of notches. Mantra opens up into a world of atmospheric pads while a strident techy kick and reverberant rim-shots mark out the beat. It’s a hypnotic vibe which draws us in further as percussive tones augment the arrangement. As distorted edges of bass start to appear, though, it’s clear the trance-like meditative state is about to be shattered.
The tune drops like a martial arts move. Kronology capture the energy from the ethereal pads and turn it back on itself in the form of bass, using its force to punch through the calmness. The flow of the intro is converted into driving power. Call and response patterns switching between basslines, backed with break-laced drums, bring irresistible movement for the dancefloor.
It’s no surprise that Kronology are building a loyal fanbase among ravers and DJs alike. They consistently deliver heavyweight dancefloor killers with twists and turns that diverge from any known formula. And here’s another one that’s bound for raves and airwaves worldwide.

2015's “Diversified” album proved unequivocally that Tantrum Desire has a spectrum-spanning palette to draw from. What with the undercurrent of deep house influence running through the tracklist and the excursions through tech, jungle and old skool sounds, it's clear that TD refuse to be pinned down to one classification.

One of the tracks that made a huge impression across raves and airwaves was “Pump”, championed by some of the biggest DJs on the scene from the moment it surfaced. Now, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have stepped up to reconfigure it for this series of remixes. So, we already know it's going to be killing off dances for the second time around.

DBS stamp their signature on the track right from the first note. Cinematic horns sculpt the intro into an epic, hands-in-the-air moment. And then it's all about the build. Arpeggiation meets the eponymous FXed vocal sample with a stomping kick progression to leave us in no doubt an almighty drop is coming.

The original version matched sparse drums with percussive plucks of synth-bass to create an irresistible skankers workout. This remix takes the elements and rearranges them into expert energy-building format. Drumsound & Bassline Smith begin with that stripped-back trap-style bass and beat and proceed to add complexity every sixteen bars. As it shifts up through the gears, this track takes the dance's hype levels with it.

These “Diversified” remixes continue the story that the LP started. The initial tracks demonstrated the multiple facets of Tantrum Desire's sound and now, even more layers have been revealed. This is an array of tunes equipped for every selector's set-list.

It's become clear that Tantrum Desire's debut album project, “Diversified”, had way more high-octane in the tank than was revealed when it first dropped in 2015. Monumental though it was, the succession of nitro-charged remixes that we've been treated to show that those sounds have a lot more to offer. And now one of the indisputably biggest names in drum and bass music has joined in the action. Yes, BBC Radio 1 and Shogun Audio's very own Friction has reported for remix duty.

“Genesis”, in its original form, was one of the breakout hits of the album, and is set to reach those heights again. Friction stamps his authority on the track immediately, and reconfigures the elements into a savagely gritty and grimy intro. Dark swathes of bass and ominous pads leave no uncertainty: this is going to be heavy. The point is driven home by a massive, rumbling kick-build, pushing the rave's anticipation off the scale.

The version we all know was marked out by those bouncy swing-time beats, and Friction delivers them in all their irresistible glory. The sharp call-and-response between high and low-end emphasises the groove even further. Friction's retained all that dancefloor energy, while adding his own extra twist of filth in the bassline.

We couldn't help skanking out to the original and this remix is just be as addictively floor-filling. With this most recent chapter of the “Diversified” story, one of the scene's heavyweights has proved that there are still twists in the tale. Another one for discerning selectors on all sides of the scene.

If Technique’s Spanish connection have flown under your radar so far, here’s your chance to catch up. Now, as the rest of us know, they might be drawing from neuro and tech influences, but producers Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, aka Gradual, have been quietly and methodically evolving their own formula. Not only does this three track EP represent some of Gradual’s most individual and technically advanced work to date but, crucially, it’s free!

First up is Ignis. Right from the intro, Gradual show that they’re creating a template all of their own. They’ve got that tech-sensibility in there, as percussive elements develop and morph. But the strings and chord changes add a touch of euphoria to proceedings. Then the drop, made from a grimy sub, a popping two-step rhythm and sparsely paranoid synth modulations, is tinted with colours straight from the neuro palette. All that, plus the skankers paradise half-time section in the second drop show that these producers are refusing to stay pigeon-holed.

Penguins harks back to the funky techstep we were used to around the turn of the millennium. As the groove emerges from a cloud of reverb, it becomes clear that catchy hooks aren’t just the preserve of jump-up. That militant synth line in the top-end is going to get right inside our minds and stay there. When that’s combined with the precision-tooled drums and speaker-rupturing jabs of bass, this is set to do serious dancefloor damage.

Finally, Space Law comes into effect. This one’s, quite simply, dangerous. The moment you hit play, it’s already building, with synth-pizzicato and rolling toms warning us of the tactical nuke that’s coming. When the kick-build adds it’s weight, the ravers better get set to go in hard. The drop strikes with tectonic sweeps of bass that rip through the low-end and mid-range, supported by those glisteningly-clean drums we’ve come to expect from Gradual. It’s dancefloor technique in action.

So, don’t be fooled by the price tag. It might not cost any money, but there’s nothing cheap about this release. These tunes are mature, assured pieces of D&B production that are bound to cement this duo’s reputation. Better get ready to see a lot more of Gradual in 2017.
