This week on Topshelf we are extremely excited to present to you German Duo, Viktor Talking Machine.

With a rich back catalogue which includes the deliciously pleasant italo number 'Lars', 2016's deep house anthem  'Plastik' with heavies of the genre Super Flu as well as our introduction to them in the beautifully soulful Line EP which featured both a superb title track and one our favourites 'Joko'.

Viktor Talking Machine are a force to be reckoned with, playing strictly Vinyl sets all over Germany as well as in Amsterdam and Vienna.

These guys have been a massive influence on us with the aforementioned EP so we couldn't be happier to have them on.
With an Hour and a half of glorious italo with inspirations straight from the 80's and 90's, we hope you enjoy Topshelf 046 with Viktor Talking Machine.

NIXII’s evocative track Last but Not Least, taken from her standout EP on Monaberry, receives a dazzling remix treatment from the ever-inventive Viktor Talking Machine. The duo reimagines the original with their signature Afro House-inspired flair, infusing the track with vibrant rhythms and an irresistible groove that breathes fresh life into the composition. The result is a stunning reinterpretation that perfectly complements the artistry of NIXII’s original work, solidifying the EP’s status as a must-hear release.

HMWL Premiere: NIIXII – Last But Not Least (Viktor Talking Machine Remix) [Monaberry]

There’s an exciting new gun marching in to the town of house music; his name is Viktor Talking Machine. 

Dropping his debut release on Super Flu’s burgeoning Monaberry label, the shadowy but talented young force - whose name is also seemingly based upon the ill fated Victor Talking Machine company that produced the very first gramophone record players -  fuses his feudal, rural experiences of Antarctic life with an arsenal of sound and texture on his refreshing ‘Abby’ EP.
 
Taking a strict mantra of ‘digital is death’, Viktor brings his expressive and deep sound through a selection of analogue instruments, galvanising his off kilter, alternative dance floor tomes with soundscapes and refreshing, naturalised washes of ambience and effect. Title track Abby – with its hollowed echoes and radar blips, sets the tone in minimal, ethereal fashion before gentle, crisp percussion brings tempo and rhythm, before snapping hi hats and bubbling, pulsating bass drive the track into the heart of any given dance floor.
 
Sven Tasnadi brings a hyper compressed analogue remix, stripping back the percussive elements and bringing the bass timbres to the fore, while Martin Waslewski comes up trumps on his equally ethereal take on Abby, but hardened by resonating drums, staunch kicks and a more perky, house purist approach on the original. Finally, Viktor awakens his machine once more Torrfel playing with fluctuating gusts of harmonics before acidic, hypnotic top line melodies bang heads with bubbling bass and stomping swing.

Herbert: Monaberry’s totem old timer, Super Flu’s dear old Opa, house music’s favourite septuagenarian and all round legend returns…

It’s been a while since he last curated a Monaberry collection (his hearing aid kaput throughout 2015)The last time being summer 2014 with Monaberry’s now-vintage ’25 Years Monaberry’ collection. But now he’s dusted off his curating cap, gently leant his walking stick against the wall, shouted “what?” a lot of times, moaned about his clicky knees, yearned for the good old days and, finally, put together one of the Halle-based label’s most beautiful collections to date.
 
Fresh out of the care home, Herb’s first pick – Super Flu & Viktor Talking Machine’s ‘Plastik’ – leads with the gusto of a man a third of his age: a twinkling arpeggio gazes up to clear night skies building in momentum with the beats and a pulsating bassline. Laced with a dramatic breakdown, you’d be advised to stash this one for the next festival marathon.

The melodic tech textures continue as Herb welcomes Boston’s Robot Love to the Monaberry fold with the touching slice of anthemia that is ‘Numbers Station’. A clipped hook gently persists with chiselled insistency. Timeless and driving, Herb tells us he picked it because it’s great to walk around the supermarket really really slowly to. We love it because it will take your dancefloor to a whole new level. Last spotted on ’25 Years Monaberry’, fellow Halle hero Martin Waslewski returns with a wistful piano-primed stroller that sees Herb striding gently but confidently towards a destination unknown (probably the chemist to
get his meds). No walking stick required. Monaberry mainstays Hanne & Lore take old Herb (or Herbie to those in the know) out to the choppy tech seas late at night, sharpen up their finest synth hook and reel in a big one. Like all fresh produce, ‘Tuna In’ is crisp to the taste and will satiate the hungriest of dancefloors. Having previously remixed Super Flu, Dortmunder Philhamoniker and Philipp Armbruster’s ‘Volkwein’, Bebetta returns to Monaberry with her label debut; an ageless groove powered by soft chord changes, mild jazz
textures and faraway crackles, it’s Herbert’s favourite for fireside chats. Finally, Parra For Cuva brings us to a touching finale. Just in time for Herb’s afternoon nap, ‘Borneo’ is awash with dreamy lilts, lingering instrumentation and positive chords. All brought together by shimmering guitar strums and cosmic ripples, listen closely and you can hear Herb smoke-belching in sync with the splashing cymbals. 

Respect your elders, respect the grooves, respect one another: 2016 is about to commence and Herbie’s picked the winning soundtrack to break it in.

Having sprinkled her magic on ‘Herbert’s Finest 06’ earlier this year, one of techno’s most distinctive vibe evangelists returns to the Monaberry family fold for her first full label release: Bebetta.

Monabetta: it’s the perfect match... Like Monaberry’s output, Bebetta’s joyous unpredictability ensures a blindfold ride into sensory abandon with not so much as a whiff of preconceptions, formula or rigidity.

‘Uppercut’ is less of a punch and more a slo-mo disco karate chop where stars and rainbows appear on impact. The uncompromised kicks and thwacking eight-bar snare snap your senses while the pensive one note riff, bulbous bass and cosmic synth weaves gradually climax into a Detroitian piano-smashing riff so evocative you could just lose your shoes.

‘Shimmy’ brings to mind oceanic ripples, which swell progressively and a timeless arpeggio, which ebbs, flows and occasionally bursts into full bodied bass before breaking out into an illustrious build where ghostly vocals mirror the sea’s glimmers in an agelessly classic way.

Remix-wise Monabetta is packing equally serious heat: Viktor Talking Machine play the quintessential Street Fighters with an ‘Uppercut’ version that pummels with a juicy 808 and a short sharp break into the heavenly piano hook. German Brigante flips the switch on ‘Shimmy’, too, twisting our focus on the creepy crawly bass and pure epicity of the chords. Finally Lowertones bossman Leix adds a softer focus to ‘Uppercut’s emotional narrative and more of a jacking swing to the drums for a shorter, subtler journey.

Following on two addendums to Acid Pauli's latest album 'BLD', the 'BLD Remixes A' and 'BLD Remixes B', 'BLD Bonus' is the final supplement to the outstanding album, 
flipping and twisting two tracks into new shapes.

Up and coming Halle (Germany) based 
duo Viktor Talking Machine take on 'Jorge' and stetch it into an epic, urgent, groover 
that builds and builds over its 12 minutes. The mysterious production duo add extra layers to the original, crafting a masterpiece for the left of center dance floors. 

As a special bonus the release includes the 'Urversion' (German for prototype version) of one of BLD's most popular tracks 'Abbebe'. The proto-version shows the tracks powerful core with its skittering rhythms and  wonky melodies which are welded together by a thick, irresistible groove, layered with live jazzy drums and unexpected diversions.

Shortly before the Tibetan Highlands, a small clearing, dressed with black fern which sways to the rhythm of the sun, extends itself. Here you can meet the inhabitants of a sleepy coastal village, who had found the remains of a huge comet years ago. A viscous dark mass that they turned immediately into brownies with ice cream and pickles. The energy that was gained from the process drives huge machines, planting anemones and helps the bees with their mating rituals. Every 1210 years when the planets order in a circular orbit, a child is born into this magical world, who comes to change everything.
