For this 98th Premiere of 2022, we have a track by the Tokyo-Based Producer/DJ "Shun" titled ‘Rohan’ from his forthcoming EP "The Door" on the independent British record label, founded in Sheffield in 2012, specialising in electronic music : Central Processing Unit (CPU Records).

The relationship between Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Shun begins in 2018, when the British label decamped to Tokyo to throw a party in the Japanese capital. Alongside a lineup which contained the likes of Fleck E.S.C., Shun was one of the local artists who DJed that night. Now, four years on, he links up with the Sheffield imprint in order to deliver dancefloor destruction in the form of new EP The Door.

There is some seriously tough club tackle here. Regular followers of CPU will be able to identify many of the sonic archetypes which have made the label a leader in the field of modern electro. These four tracks are backed by broken-beat machine-funk snaps in the vein of Drexciya, Jensen Interceptor and the like, and one finds a sense of dystopian futurism running through The Door which links it to other CPU drops.

However, there is also a gritty, saturated feel to these productions which marks Shun out from the pack. With their writhing, insistent bass melodies and heat-treated drum programming, opening cuts ‘Digital Slave’ and ‘Kishibi’ have plenty in common with the underground wiggle of labels like Super Rhythm Trax, while prominent use of 303s also provide these tunes with an acidic tang.

Another quality which distinguishes Shun’s vision is the inspiration he draws from anime. Track titles like ‘Kishibi’ and ‘Rohan’ are references to Kishibe Rohan, a figure from the manga ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ in which the names of characters and their specific techniques are drawn from musical sources. This give and take with influences outside of music is further felt in how Shun makes liberal use of keyboard melodies that nod to horror and sci-fi movies - the introduction of such synths into ‘Kishibi’ and ‘Rohan’ give The Door an almost cinematic quality which is amplified still further by the vocal snippets which flit around the mix on several tracks.

Japanese producer Shun debuts on Central Processing Unit with The Door, an EP of hard-bitten, acidic electro bangers.

The 24th release of Sengiley has been in preparation and languishing for a long time, like aged dry wine in a French castle cellar, a French bouquet of young talents from Awlies & Véronique Samsung on their original Spot The Difference EP!

This experimental release is a dynamic and hypnotic journey where the languid and experimental sound of Awlies replaces the expressive and driving versions of the duo Véronique Samsung. Individually, Véronique Samsung is a living duo, born after a decade of collaboration between Clement Cosse and Tom Nomine, in 2019 in Nantes (France). The project has recently been marked by several great experimental releases and their virtuoso live show with drum machines, synthesizers and guitar, which showed their professionalism, seriousness of intentions and noticeable recognition.

Awlies, hidden in his Parisian studio in the middle of his tower of analog instruments, between a mpc and a cassette recorder, wants to produce a music without rules. A bit nostalgic, he naively seeks to find the electronic music of yesteryear based on contemporary melodic structures.

His part on the EP remains a plan without a projected artistic direction, like a bottle in the sea. Here, Awlies wanted to try deep-house, he tried.

After a break of 6 years, Atlanta based electronic musician, producer and sound designer Richard Devine returns with a new album ‘Sort\Lave’ on Venetian Snares‘ Timesig imprint. Recorded between 2016 and 2017 using Richard’s custom built Eurorack modular system and two Nord G2 Modular units, Sort\Lave features 12 tracks of intricate electronica that ranges from abrasive percussive experiments such as ‘Revsic‘ to ‘Astra’s dazzling juxtaposition of sounds and onto the radiant ambience of the album’s closer ‘Takara‘.

Talking about the album’s genesis Devine explains “I’ve been using modular synthesizers since I was 17, but have never written complete tracks using these newer systems. This was my first experiment to see if it would be possible and I probably spent about 5 years building up the systems that I used on this album.”

“I wanted the record to sound very different to my previous works which had been more cold, digital, clinical even, and had all been made using computers. The aim here was the complete opposite, to create something that felt very organic, detailed, spacious, big and warm and just as importantly, a record that you could put on and play all the way through that flowed in a seamless way.”

This new approach was to prove fruitful and enabled Devine to create music in an entirely new way. “I really wanted to break free from timeline-based music creation and do things with my hands on the fly,” he explains. “So the tracks are more like captured snapshot performances where I could experiment and play around with the idea of probability-based sequencing for every patch, string multiple sequencers together that would feed other sequencers to come up with interesting rhythms and melodies. It was really fun coming up with new sounds this way too, I felt like I created several I haven't heard before with this album. Some of the tracks on the album were complete accidents and evolved from something that happened spontaneously. In the end I feel this is one of the best records I have released to date, so I’m very excited to share it with the world.”

Making his debut in 1995, Devine’s releases for labels including Schematic, Warp Records and Detroit Underground have established him as one of the leading figures within the electronica community. In addition to his musical productions, Devine has enjoyed a lengthy and successful career in sound design, developing patches for many of the world’s leading music technology businesses and working with companies such as Google and Nike.
