It's mostly techno – but with some glitchy bass noises and grimey percussion to stretch the common definition ;)

Tubular Hells

Here is the full audio recording (thanks to Stormfield!) of my Villain liveset at a recent Crux event. I’m happy to be sharing this because I’m crap at recording my own sets, and also really bad at repeating livesets... 
I made this setup exclusively for a Don’t party in 2017 and it fuses together my two liveset approaches – remix sets or full improvisation. This has a bit of both; the ‘melodic’ synth are all MIDI parts and synth patches extracted from various production tracks, there are some audio loops in there too for added drive and texture and some pre-made drum kits (sounds, no loops). 
All of the drum sequencing, synth tweaking, mixing, FX and arrangement is done on the spot via Lemur app on iPad, Ableton Push, M-Audio X-Session, Korg Nanopad. 
I didn’t work with any pre-ordained combination of clips or any thoughts on how the set should progress. It’s much more fun and live that way and throws up the usual trick of tossing golden moments of live performance bliss into moments of actual toss. 
The method was to build up a track and then, when it was in full flow, record an 8-bar loop of it. The loop is automatically running on the other side of the crossfader, so I was flicking the fader over – so I can build up a new track in the headphones whilst the audience are now listening to the loop. When I’ve got the semblance of something new together I will then crossfade it (brutally) in and aim for a DJ mix style of set.
Any seeming lapses in concentration are probably down to me getting new tracks ready in the headphones and then completely losing track of where the 8-bar loop was. I found it hard to keep on top of the cue monitoring – ideally I’d run my step sequencer off an iPad Pro and keep the smaller iPad just as a control panel for sound selection and cue setup. One can dream.
Some of the combinations of synth parts worked better than others, whilst some of the FX edits are simply terrible. I also got a bit carried away and forgot about time, so the end probably has less energy to it through my self-indulgence.

I was just checking out the Metapop site and I saw that London Modular Alliance had some stems up for a remix competition. Some jiggery-pokery, an upping of the tempo and a vocal sample later and voila – this is what turned up...
