Valkyrie, in Norse mythology, are maidens who served the god Odin and were sent by him to the battlefields to choose the slain who were worthy of a place in Valhalla.

These foreboders of war rode to the battlefield on horses, wearing helmets and shields; in some accounts, they flew through the air and sea. Some Valkyries had the power to cause the death of the warriors they did not favour; others, especially heroine Valkyries, guarded the lives and ships of those dear to them. Old Norse literature made references to purely supernatural Valkyries and also to human Valkyries with certain supernatural powers.

Both types of beings were associated with fairness, brightness, and gold, as well as bloodshed. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens and sometimes connected to swans or horses. Some depict valkyrie to have actual horns and hair that fades to a feather.

The word valkyrie derives from Old Norse valkyrja (plural valkyrjur), which is composed of two words: the noun valr (referring to the slain on the battlefield) and the verb kjósa (meaning "to choose"). Together, they mean 'chooser of the slain'.

Specific valkyries are mentioned on two runestones; the early 9th century Rök Runestone in Östergötland, Sweden, and the 10th-century Karlevi Runestone on the island of Öland, Sweden, which mentions the valkyrie Þrúðr. On the Rök Runestone, a kenning is employed that involves a valkyrie riding a wolf as her steed.

Valkyrie

Rollo was a Viking chieftain who became the founder and first ruler of the region of Normandy. He converted to Christianity as part of a deal with the Frankish king Charles the Simple (893-923 CE) in 911 CE (changing his name to Robert) and his story was then embellished upon by later Christian writers who held him up as a role model: a savage Viking chief who became a paragon of Christian virtue and established law in the land. In doing so, however, they largely ignored whatever was known of Rollo's life prior to his involvement with Charles.

He is the great-great-great grandfather of William the Conqueror (first Norman King of England, 1066-1087 CE) and ancestor of a number of European monarchs who trace their line to his immediate descendants. Since 2013 CE, Rollo has been featured in the TV series Vikings in which he is played by British actor Clive Standen. Contrary to his depiction in the series, there is no evidence to suggest that Rollo was the brother of Ragnar Lothbrok but there are suggestions that Rollo did participate in, or even lead, the siege of Paris in 885-886 CE as depicted in the show.
Rollo was baptized in 912 but is said to have died a pagan.

Rollo Duke of Normandy

All sources agree that Ragnar died in England, although the legends of the cause of his death vary. In one story, he is killed by the Northumbrian King Ælla when he is thrown into a pit os venemous snakes. In another, he is murdered in East Anglia after befriending Kind Edmund. Although the date is sometimes given as 840, that seems unlikely as the Viking invasion of England by Ragnar's sons takes place in 865.

Although the historicity of Ragnar has been challenged and debated, it is important to note that he is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The Chronicle was first compiled around 890 AD and is widely considered to be a relatively accurate telling of Anglo-Saxon history. As this would only be some 50 years previously, it would seem we can rest certain that there was a much feared Viking Chieftain by that name. With that said,, it does appear that certain stories have been attached to Ragnar which are actually about other Viking leaders.

Whatever the case, we do know that the "Great Heathen Army" led by three sons of Ragnar's landed in 865 and commenced a 14 year long war against the small Saxon Kingdoms (Heptarchy) of 9th Century England. It is possible that the invasion may have had to do with avenging the murder of Ragnar. An alternative and probably better theory holds that the invasion was to retake lands previously claimed by Ragnar. As was common Viking practice, the invaders were more than willing to be paid off to attack some other group. The story is told that the King of East Anglia gave the Vikings horses in return for their agreement to attack other kingdoms.
