Solid Steel (1st November) Having announced that Four Tet will be joining the line up for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London on 6th Dec, we now hand over the decks to him for a 2 Hour exclusive mix. 
Four Tet's history with the show extends back to his first mix in 2001 and part of the Solid Steel US Tour that year with DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. He was also the first guest at the monthly Solid Steel club night in 2004, with more mixes to follow and his music has been consistently played on the show. 

As with all our 25th Anniversary guests, we asked for something different and here's what he said about his mix;

"This mix is made from unofficial edits and mixes.  I guess these edits were mainly made to be played in clubs and I've always like the tradition of DJs extending and rearranging to make things work in their sets.  Most of the edits here are unreleased because they are just tools for DJs really.  The Black Unity one was done for the Solid Steel US tour that I did in 2001.  Thanks to Daphni, Floating Points and Happa for the edits I got from them."

Our guest in Hour 2 is LeFtO with a mix digging into some of Belgium's finest and here is what he says about his fellow countrymen;

"This is a mix of what I consider our heritage.  It's an almost forgotten 70's era of incredible good jazz and fusion made in Belgium by musical geniuses.  
The most famous artist in that genre was probably Marc Moulin, who was known outside of Belgium for his more recent releases on Blue Note.  But in the early seventies Marc Moulin founded a jazz fusion band, Placebo.  Kirk Degiorgio signed the band on his label Counterpoint by insisting on the relevance and visionary side of the group.  These releases are still on the list of many diggers today.  
Another artist who's been sampled by the greatest is René Costy.  A violin player with a successful career which ended - from what I heard - with a job on Belgian television as a composer.  He has an enormous amount of library songs - over 400 - and in different genres.  Huge catalogue but the most notable song was probably "Scrabble" on Chappell International (part of Universal Music) which was sampled by the late Jay Dee aka J Dilla for his classic hip hop record "fuck the police".

Solid Steel Radio Show 28/2/2014 Part 3 + 4 - DK + Contact Field Orchestra

The fifth in Joe Acheson's annual series of studio mixtapes for Tru Thoughts Records comes in two parts, and is timed to celebrate the upcoming release of 'Archipelago Remixes EP (Part 2)', the follow-up to 2013's first remix EP of the second Hidden Orchestra album.

The main theme of the mixtape is remixes, both of and by Hidden Orchestra, and the mix also contains the customary eclectic wealth of music from around the world, multi-layered mashups and reworkings, field recordings, and plenty of spoken word including interviews and poetry recitals.

Part 2 of the mix will be released in the next few weeks.

The only full tour the Hidden Orchestra live band are making in 2014 is around Europe from March 26th to the end of April - there will also be a few one-off gigs and festival appearances - www.hiddenorchestra.com/dates

A short expedition into the much overlooked tipica cumbia sound of Panamá

The heartache, melancholy and joy in the Panamá Tipica sound is hard to match and like no other to experience. It comes from a rich background of regional musical traditions, carnival rivalry and hotbeds like the legendary 'Festival en Guarare'. As I understand it, Panamanian cumbia was first played on violin until the arrival of accordions on the Isthmus, most early acordeoneros were violinists first and foremost. This mixtape comprises of some of the best 45s from the Herrera and Los Santos provinces, from the mid 50s through to late 60s. Over the last few years I've had the good fortune to meet several of these wonderful artists. Featured here: Dorindo, Papi Brandao, Oswaldo,Fito Espina, Ulpiano, Ceferino and more... Mixtape: TIPICA Sound

This is a mix of folkloric and outer-regional music of Ethiopia, all 45s, records that I feel need to be heard. Less of breakbeats & wah wah and this time more of krar, claps, howling organs and trad melodies. For fans of previous mixes ‘Axum to Addis’ and ‘Addis Sheckla Explosion’.

Traditional Ethiopian Selection

This is a selection of a handful of Angolan 45s that have proven their spirit & longevity in my record collection. Here's to the slap-echo guitars, scratchy dikanza, hope, aspiration and musical beauty that flowered from Luanda. This sound has long informed the systems of Barranquilla and parallels cumbia, samba & compas in sonic ancestral synchronicity.
